U/19 League Cup

Athea Utd    (0) 2      Michael Woods, Danial Daly.

Kilcornan    (2) 2

The new look Desmond U/19 League Cup got underway last Saturday with five games taking place. The format will see the eleven teams play each other once with each team playing five home and five away games, the top two contesting the league cup final, third and fourth will play a shield final and fifth and sixth playing a plate final.

Our first game was a home fixture with Kilcornan and after a keenly contested ninety minutes a share of the spoils was the outcome and in a way this was a fair result given that we were two down at half time. We showed much more urgency after the break and fifteen minutes into the second half we reduced the gap when a powerful run from midfield by Danial Daly ended with a shot that was blocked with the ball falling to sub Michael Woods who slotted the ball into an unguarded net from close range. Five minutes later we were level when Maurice Hayes played a superb ball to Danial Daly who rounded the advancing keeper before firing home. After this we carried the greater threat but a couple of decent saves by the Kilcornan keeper meant a share of the points for both sides.

Best for Athea were Danial Daly and Jamie Sheehan while Mark Horgan, Shane Mulvihill and Ian Murphy worked very hard as did Michael Woods who made a great impression when introduced. Next up is a derby game away to Abbeyfeale this evening at 6.30pm.

Team: Ryan Carroll, Kevin Murphy, David Sheehan, Jamie Sheehan, Shane Mulvihill, Danial Daly, Maurice Hayes, Dylan Griffin, Mark Horgan, Liam O’Connor, Ian Murphy. Subs used:Michael Woods and Michael Mullane.
