Division 1 League Cup Final

Athea Utd 2 Ballingarry 3 (after extra time)

Scorers: Gerard Collins, Michael Reidy

We contested the division one league cup final against Ballingarry last Sunday afternoon at a blustery Clounreask but it was our opponents that came out on top after extra time. We were missing a couple of players through injury. The first chance came from a Ballingarry free kick taken by their keeper that went just over the bar. We responded and had a chance through skipper Padraig Horgan as he was inches away from meeting a cross from Kevin O’Keeffe an we came closer soon after when another O’Keeffe cross saw Joe Vaughan tee up Darren Murphy whose effort was cleared off the line. The opening goal came on twenty five minutes when Timmy Enright had initially made a great save the rebound broke to a Ballingarry player to score from the edge of the penalty area. Great play by Murphy almost created a rapid equalizer when he slipped the ball into O’Keeffe but he was denied by the outstretched leg of the keeper at the near post. Murphy and O’Keeffe twice more linked up well to create chances while a Vaughan shot was put behind for a corner by the keeper but at the interval we trailed one nil.

The second half saw plenty effort but we didn’t create a whole pile and neither did Ballingarry and it was around the halfway point of the second half that the half came to life when Gerard Collins powered home the equalizer low inside the right post when a cross by O’Keeffe was only cleared as far as the edge of the box. Not long though we fell behind again when not dealing with a set piece and the Ballingarry player headed a corner to the net. We had a chance of a quick response when Murphy chipped the keeper and the ball broke to O’Keeffe and the midfielders strike looked to be going wide until Murphy got on to it to force a save from the keeper. With the clock running down we pushed forward again and got a last gasp equalizer when Michael Reidy took a free-kick from the right that somehow ended in the Ballingarry net.

On so to extra time and in the first half we had a great chance when sub Tomas Quinn headed narrowly wide after a Vaughan free-kick was knocked down by Atheas man of the match Tom Collins. However with three minutes left in extra time disaster came when a free kick was headed to the net to give Ballingarry the lead for the third time and try as we did to summon a third equalizer it wasn’t to be.

Team: Tim Enright, Michael Reidy, Padraig Reidy, Martin Chawke, Tom Collins, Padraig Horgan, Joe Vaughan, Gerard Collins, Conor Mullane, Kevin O’Keeffe, Darren Murphy. Subs used Tomas Quinn. Also Matthew Tierney.

Ronan Hayes got Athea’s second point before Crecora pulled another point back.  Just before half James Ryan got another goal for Athea as we lead 2-4 to 0-3 at the break. In the second half we started well with points coming from William Sexton, James Ryan & Ronan Hayes. Crecora then came back into the game with a goal and a point but Athea’s third goal fro JJ Sheehy put the result beyond doubt and James Ryan got the last point of the game as Athea ran out easy winners on a scoreline of 3-7 to 1-4.
