DIVISION 4 LEAGUE CUP

Athea Utd B 5 Glantine B 2.

Scorers: Steven McEnery (2,1 pen), Morgan O’Connor, Jason Quille, Paddy Horgan

After a somewhat sluggish start to this game the B’s eventually got things going against Glantine B and pulled away in the final quarter though there were one or two scares along the way. Glantine opened the scoring but we were soon level when Steven McEnery converted from the spot but by half time the visitors had regained the lead. The second half was a different Athea and we deservedly levelled when Paddy Horgan’s free kick was spilled by the keeper and Morgan O’Connor was on hand to slam home the rebound. Soon after we hit the front when the ball fell invitingly for Jason Quille from a corner and he guided the ball into the far corner. Glantine should have equalized ten minutes later when a long ball wasn’t dealt with and it took a brilliant save from Mickey Hayes to keep us in front. Two goals in the closing minutes from Navan, after a super ball from Pa Kiely and then McEnery with his second of the day gave us a good win in the end but theres a few things to work on before the next game.

Team: Mickey Hayes, John Geoghegan, Conor McGrath, Pa Kiely, Jason Quille, Kieran Dalton Eoin Nash, Paddy Horgan, Gary Carroll, Steven McEnery, Bobby Barrett.

Sub used: Morgan O’Connor.

U/16 Division 1

Athea Utd  2 NCW Rovers 3.

Scorers: Jamie Sheehan, Maurice Hayes

The sixteens completed their league fixtures with a home defeat against Newcastle West Rovers last Thursday night though in truth this game was there for the winning but defensive lapses cost us after we came from behind twice to equalize. At half time we were a goal down but we should have being ahead early on with Dylan Griffin having a great chance with only the keeper to beat but he blazed over. Early in the second half we were level when a cross from Maurice Hayes picked out Jamie Sheehan on the edge of the box and he fired right footed across the keeper and inside the left post. Within five minutes we were behind again after an own goal but we rallied again and equalized a second time after a great move which began down the right with Ryan Carroll and he delivered a pacey cross which Dylan Griffin dummied and this allowed Maurice Hayes to cut past two defenders before planting the ball past the keeper. Now was the time to push on but we fell behind again to a shot from distance that crept inside the post and whether we could come back was the question. Again Athea took the game to the visitors with Griffin, Hayes and sub Kevin Murphy keeping Rovers on the back foot but the visitors held on to take the points.

Team: Jonathan Fitzgerald, Dan Mullane, Gary Vaughan, Jamie Sheehan, Mark O’Connor, Michael Mullane, Maurice Hayes, Ryan Carroll, Jason Flaherty, Dylan Griffin, Sub: Kevin Murphy.

U/8 – U/10 Friendly v Listowel Celtic

A mixture of Athea U/8’s and U/10’s played Listowel Celtic in a friendly at The Vales last Wednesday night. This was a very exciting game as both side were very evenly matched and scoring chances were hard to come by. Our defenders were on top from the very start with Gavin Ambrose, Brandon Finucane and David O’ Connor dealing with all Listowels attacks. Our midfield battled hard as David O’ Sullivan, Jack O’ Connor and Michael Tierney were in flying form. Alex McEndowney and Sarah O’ Connor kept the visitors busy as they threatened their goal with a couple of great chances. The first break through came when sub Shane Dalton tore the Listowel defence apart and scored a great goal just before half time. In the second half, we were put under fierce pressure but our midfield and defence stood up to everything. We got our second goal as Shane Dalton found the net again. Then just before the end Listowel got a goal, but we held on and this young team got the win they deserved beating Listowel Celtic 2-1.

Team: Brandon Finucane, David O’Connor, Gavin Ambrose, David O’Sullivan, Jack O’Connor, Michael Tierney, Sarah O’Connor, Alex McEndowney, Shane Dalton.
