“REIDY CUP FINAL THIS FRIDAY NIGHT”

Clonreask is the venue this coming Friday night when our A’s travel there to play their second Reidy Cup Final in as many seasons and hoping to do better than last year when Glantine came from behind to beat us 2-1. The opposition on this occasion will be provided by Ferry Rangers and despite being in a lower division will be well up for this final. Since losing to Glantine last season we also lost the Desmond Cup Final, which was our very first time reaching that final where we were well beaten by a classy Rathkeale side so the players that were involved in both those losses should be well motivated this time around.

We have played four games to reach this stage again with home wins over Abbeyfeale Utd B (5-1) and Broadford Utd B (6-3) in the opening two rounds while in the quarter finals we won away to Adare Utd B (4-1) and in the semi finals we eventually got the better of Glantine with a 4-0 away win. We haven’t played Ferry Rangers too any times but know that they will be tough to beat in any final so we will be looking for plenty Athea support in Clonreask next Friday night. Remember Kick Off is at 7.30pm.

U/16 Division 1

Athea Utd 3    NCW 0.

Scorers: Dylan Griffin (2), Maurice Hayes

We go back to winning ways at home to Newcastle west on Saturday. A bright start led to an early goal when a fine move resulted culminated in David Sheehan crossing for Dylan Griffin to put us ahead, his well controlled header nestling into the bottom corner. There were a few wasted opportunities after that but the number of chances we were creating were becoming less frequent as the game went on. It wasn’t until late in the second half that we increased our advantage was increased to two when Dylan scored a fine individual goal when he came in from the left and fired the ball into the top left corner and despite the keeper getting a touch to the ball it just had too much pace and accuracy and we were well on our way to a much needed win. The points were secure soon after as Maurice Hayes made it three nil with a powerful low drive from outside the box, again following a fine move involving numerous players. Best on the day were Mark O’Connor, Daniel Daly and Jason O’Flaherty.

Team: Jonathan Fitzgerald, Ryan Carroll, Gary Vaughan, Mike Mullane, Mark O’Connor, Maurice Hayes, Danial Daly, Jason O’Flaherty, Jamie Sheehan, David Sheehan, Dylan Griffin. Sub: Peter O’Connor.

U/8 Division 4

NCW Rovers B 1 Athea Utd B  6.

Scorers: Andrew O’Riordan (4) Jack Hunt (2)

The U8 B team were away to Newcastle West Rovers on Saturday afternoon last and another good performance saw them pick up their second league win in as many games. Athea were well on their way to victory by half time when they led four one with Andrew O’Riordan scoring three goals and Jack Hunt the other and in the second half both these players scored once more. In truth it was a very good team performance with all players playing their hearts out and we look forward to their next game which is at The Vales next Wednesday evening. Well done Athea.

Team: Aidan Curry, Andrew O’Riordan, Eoin O’Shea, Padraic Enright, Conor Mullane, Gearoid O’Sullivan, Pierce O’Brien, Micheal Walsh, TJ Hunt, Jack Hunt, Daire O’Shea.

U/8 Division 1

Athea Utd A 0 Glin Rovers 3.

An under strength A team were at home to Glin Rovers and put up a great display but it was Glin who proved stronger over the course of the game and ended up winning three nil.

Team: Eoin Sheahan, Thomas McEnery, Danny Brady, Brandon Finucane, Evan Wallace, Sarah O’Connor, Gavin Ambrose.

U/12 Division 1

Athea Utd 1 Abbeyfeale Utd A  6.

Scorer: William Sexton

After cup action in our last two outings it was back to league action for the twelves last Saturday when Abbeyfeale Utd were visitors to The Vales. On the day though the visitors proved that bit stronger and went away with a six one win. The highlight for Athea on the day was a super goal from William Sexton to the top corner from twenty five yards before half time to make the score two one at that stage and that’s how it stood at half time. The visitors then pulled away in the second half.

Team: Timothy Tierney, Padraig O’Sullivan, Cillian Liston, Sean Ryan, William McEnery, Liam McAuliffe, James Ryan, William Sexton, JJ Sheehy, Ronan Hayes, John Sexton.

Subs: Andy Ahern and Mark McAuliffe.

Division 1 League

Kilcolman 1 Athea Utd 1.

Scorer: Darren Murphy (pen)

Our As were away to Kilcolman last Sunday morning and while we came away with a point it probably should have being all three given how much possession we had, especially in the opening half. In that opening forty five minutes we were well ahead on the corner count but just werent able to find the net and at half time it was scoreless. The homeside who hadn’t troubled Tomas Quinn in the first half were the side to make the breakthrough in the second half when a half volley from twenty yards found the Athea net. We kept looking for what would be a very deserved equalizer when Darren Murphy confidently converted from the penalty spot after Kevin O’Keeffe was fouled in the area. Full time 1-1.

Team: Tomas Quinn, Padraig Horgan, Conor Mullane, Tom Collins, Matthew Tierney, Joe Vaughan, Pa Ahern, Jamie Collins, Ger Collins, Darren Murphy, Kevin O’Keeffe. Sub used: Brian Ahern.
