THE MULVIHILL VOICE

The music of Martin Mulvihill has astounded lovers of Irish music for
decades. The renowned fiddle player, teacher and composer, originally
from

Ballygouglin, near Glin, Co. Limerick, was taught to play the fiddle
as an 8-year-old child by his mother, Brigid Flynn, who played fiddle
and concertina. She hailed from a family of fiddle players herself.
Recording artist and fiddle player Brendan Mulvihill, Martin’s son,
has just released a comprehensive box set with easy-to-read sheet
music of traditional Irish tunes that his famous father collected over
his long career.

Four volumes are now offered for sale, in two spiral bound books. Over
2,300 tunes are included along with biographical information on many
of the

130 musicians, living and dead, whose music Martin admired and played.

Vigo County Historical Society- Civil War: Jerry Fitzgerald

Jerry Fitzgerald- native of Kerry County, Ireland, bakery owner and
Vigo County Clerk Jeremiah Fitzgerald is best remembered for saving
Memorial Hall from condemnation in 1920-21. Fitzgerald was 19 years
old when he migrated to the U.S. in 1892, first locating in Mattoon,
Ill. He moved to Vigo County two years later and wed Mary Holland of
St. Mary’s Village in 1897. Jerry went to work as a deliveryman for
Louis Gerhardt’s Bakery at 724 S. 12th St. The Jerry Fitzgerald (third
from left) celebrates his Fitzgerald’s initially resided at 61st
birthday with bakery employees in 1934 605 S. 13th St., and began
raising three children: Margaret, born in 1900; Joseph, born in 1904;
and Raymond, born in 1906, the year Jeremiah was naturalized. In 1910,
after Gerhardt was elected mayor of Terre Haute, Fitzgerald decided to
establish his own bakery. Jerry’s Bakery at 209 Ohio St. had a modest
beginning but, by adhering to high standards, Fitzgerald soon acquired
two adjoining buildings and modern oven equipment. Fitzgerald offered
Kew-Bee and Pullman bread, Irish bread, rye bread, Ralston Purina
whole wheat bread, raisin bread and a full line of cookies, buns and
rolls. Eventually, Fitzgerald was invited to join the Quality Bakers
of America, a non-profit organization which tendered memberships only
to bakeries long maintaining a reputation for excellence. In 1923 Carl
T. Lundstrom, formerly of Sparks Milling Co., joined the business and
the two men incorporated as Fitzgerald Baking Co. Meanwhile, Jerry
became a community hero by forming a citizens committee in 1920 to
“Save Memorial Hall,” located next door to his bakery. The building
now houses Kesler Law Offices. Prior to being acquired by the Memorial
Hall Association from miniature artist Amalia Kussner Coudert in 1911,
the former Second State Bank of Indiana (predecessor of First
Financial Bank)–built between 1834 and 1836–was a collectibles shop
and fell into disrepair. Though the original structure’s tin ceiling
dome was replaced by art glass and the exterior received a complete
refurbishing, the Indiana State Fire Marshal threatened to condemn it.
On Oct. 21, 1921, Fitzgerald’s fund-raising efforts reached fruition
at the “rededication” of renovated Memorial Hall. The front room was
converted into an auditorium and the art glass in the ceiling dome was
replaced by 18 tinted portraits of significant Vigo County Civil War
soldiers and past bank officers. Long active in Democratic politics,
Fitzgerald was elected Vigo County Clerk in 1932. He did not complete
his first term, passing away at the family residence at 1826 Ohio St.
on May 27, 1935, at age 62, after a two-month illness. Active in the
Knights of Columbus, the Ancient Order of Hibernians and St. Patrick’s
Church, Jerry is interred at Calvary Cemetery. His widow was named
chief deputy clerk by his successor, Catherine S. Fee. The buildings
that housed the Ohio Street bakery were sold to Bell Bakeries. The
Lundstroms located Fitzgerald Baking Co. at 13th and Crawford streets.
It eventually became Ideal-Fitzgerald Baking Co., involving other
principals.

Sick notes used to sign people off work could be overhauled under
plans to slash unemployment, Liz Kendall has revealed, as she refused
to rule out further benefit cuts.

The Work and Pensions Secretary said the process was being looked as
part of moves to stop people falling out of the workforce due to a
health issue.

Speaking to The i Paper, Kendall – who announced billions of pounds in
welfare savings in a bid to reduce levels of people claiming
disability and out of work incapacity benefits – said she could not
rule out having to introduce future cuts in the economic climate.

“For me, God is my reason for being.”

Sister Ángeles Sendín Corral shared a message full of faith, which
moved hearts across social media.

In an interview with educational psychologist Sergi Vidal, the Spanish
nun of the Society of Saint Teresa of Jesus emphasized that for her,
God is everything. Without Him, she said, her life has no meaning.

“For me, God is my reason for being. I can’t conceive of myself if
I don’t think of Him. That is, there are days when I argue with Him,
others when I love Him very much, and others… But without Him, my
life has no meaning.”

The Way I See It

By Domhnall de Barra

There was a woman on the radio the other day complaining about adverts on RTE that showed women shaving certain parts of their bodies. It was an ad for razors showing ones designed for underarms, legs and another one for the pubic area.  I had seen this on several occasions and never gave it a second thought but the woman thought it was, in her words, disgusting and ads like this should not be allowed.  Now, the ad in question just shows a woman shaving above the knickers line and does not expose any pubic area but I suppose the mere mention of it was enough to enrage the  poor woman. I was about to dismiss her as a prude until I began to think about the reason for the way she thought. I knew from her voice she was not a young woman so she probably grew up in the same culture as I did where we were taught to be ashamed of our bodies. We couldn’t even use proper names for our “private” areas and women, in particular were encouraged to cover as much of their bodies as possible. Some young women weren’t even taught about their period until it happened to them, usually at school. We were never informed about sex; it didn’t exist and of course our parents never had any as we  were all delivered by a nurse or found under a bush. I often wonder about the covering up of women’s legs. If we got a glimpse of a thigh it was mind blowing but it is all in the mind. When we went to the strand in Ballybunion during the summer, there were women dressed in skimpy swimsuits and, after a couple of minutes, no notice was taken of them. It is the idea of seeing something that is forbidden that turns us on. We all have body parts and there should be no shame about them. Some women do shave their legs, arms, under arms and , yes, their pubic areas. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it and nobody should be offended by an ad depicting them doing that as long as it is done discretely. There was also an objection to adverts for sanitary towels and the likes but they are also necessary and people have a right to be able to choose the best and most appropriate for themselves. Thank God we live in a more enlightened world today where children are given proper information and have no problem understanding the facts of life and human relationships. This is what proper education is all about and we need it to counter what appears on social media platforms. Any question asked by a child should be answered honestly and truthfully. They will be all the better for it.

Another item on the radio caught my attention. It was about a forthcoming programme talking to priests about confession. There aren’t that many going now but, back in the day, it was a big thing on Saturday nights. I remember the church in Abbeyfeale where there would be three different priests in different boxes hearing confession lasting for many hours. There were long seats, stretching from both sides of the confession box, full of people waiting to tell their sins. I got my first confession in the usual way. We were told how to do it at school and had it off by heart before the day when we cycled to the village to make our first admissions of sin. It was the custom then to go to confession at least once a month and I did that for years using the very same words as I did the first day with maybe an addition or two. It went like this: “bless me Father for I have sinned. It has been four weeks since my last confession. I cursed, I told lies, |I took the Lord’s name in vein, I was disobedient to my father and mother.”  I’m sure the priest was bored to tears listening to us all with almost the same stories every month but that changed once we took interest in the opposite sex. Confession then became very difficult, admitting that you had impure thoughts etc.   Things were strict back then so, God forbid you had any physical contact with the opposite sex because that was going into the occasion of sin and that was a mortal sin in itself. I remember, after having a kiss and cuddle with my first date,  being afraid that I would die before I got absolution and would burn in Hell forever. It was all about fear. God was just waiting for you to slip up so that you could be punished. The idea of confession has some merit. It is good to be able to admit your failings to another human being and also to God, if that is what you believe but there should be no need to be going every week  with a few failings that are normal to most people. I have known some good priests and some very bad ones. One of the best told me once; “when you die, God will not ask you how many times you went to Mass or received Holy Communion. He will be more interested in how you treated your family, friends and neighbours.”   How you live your life is what really matters. I knew people who went to Mass every day but were not good to their spouses and children. My grandmother gave me a rule to live by. She said; “if you can’t do somebody any good, don’t do them any harm.”  Wise words indeed.

Other wise words at this time of year, especially with people throwing off their clothes during this fine spell:

“April and May keep away from the sea,

June, July you can swim ‘till you die”

It may feel like summer but there is still a nature of frost at night so, be careful!

KATHLEEN ATKINS:  The death has taken place of Kathleen Atkins (nee Murphy) Knockfinisk, Athea, peacefully at University Hospital Limerick on Saturday March 29. Predeceased by her father Jim, mother Ellen, brother Kevin. Reposing at Riedy’s Funeral Home Newcastle West on Tuesday April 1, from 6pm, followed by removal to St Bartholomew’s Church Athea. The Requiem Mass was celebrated by Father Willie Russell on Wednesday at 12 noon, and family members participated. Life symbols important to Kathleen were taken up to the Altar, before Mass commenced. They included items to show her love for music, home, running and family. Fr Willie and husband David paid lovely tributes  to Kathleen during the ceremony. The Mass was followed by cremation in Shannon Crematorium at 4pm.

Sympathy to her husband David, sons Dylan and Jamie, brothers Pat, James, Tim, Mike, aunt Catherine Goulding, mother-in-law Marie, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. Kathleen was an employee at Pallas Foods and the only girl in the family of six. Her life revolved around her family and their welfare.
