Knockdown News – 11/3/25

by Peg Prendeville

I have to say that “Sharon’s Grave” by the Athea Drama Group was one of the best plays I’ve ever seen. It was flawless from start to finish. I was not familiar with the story and was expecting a dreary murder story but this was full of laughter and witty lines. One could guess that it was a John B play without ever knowing who wrote it and so the script did not disappoint either. Directed by Tom Denihan it got full marks from me. Everybody stood out but my favourite characters were Deezie (Anne Marie Horgan) and Neilus (I hope I got that right) played by Johnny Corkery. It would be difficult to find a better performance anywhere. Well done to all. We must wait til after Easter for the Abha Bhán Players to stage The Field.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Melissa, who with her partner Jamie Tees and son Eli, is living in what was formerly my Uncle Dan Faley’s house in Turraree. Melissa does a few hours in our new shop and tells me they are very happy in their new house. The former owners John and Mary moved some time ago.

These lovely days are very welcome and gives us reason to look forward to lots more as the summer comes into view. Of course I know it is only March and we can get any kind of weather yet but we are enjoying this taster. The turf machines are being oiled up. I’m almost sure I heard the sound of one recently.

Abbeyfeale Notes – 11/3/25

by Marain Harnett

DEATH:  Sincere sympathy to the family of the late Sadie Flynn Templeglantine – a valued member of Abbeyfeale Active Retired (ARA).  May she rest in peace.

GLORACH CONCERT:  PRO Lorcan Curtin writes:  It was somewhat appropriate that the extremely funny and very successful production of the play Troubled Bachelors finished its run on Saturday, International Womens Day, given the very important role played by the female characters in the play in changing the mindset of the Bachelors in question.  Female performers will be to the fore on next Friday, March 14th, with our St Patricks Weekend Concert featuring a whole host of talented musicians and singers, including Helen Hasenfuss, Ríona ní Churtáin and Noreen Cotter to name but a few, while the second half will feature the Studio Singers of the Susan Browne Vocal and Performance Studio.  A variety of pop, soul, jazz, folk and trad numbers are in store for what promises to be a fantastic night of music and a memorable start to a varied weekend of events in the town.  Curtains up at 8 pm on the night, make sure to avoid disappointment by booking at 0871383940 or www.glorachabbeyfeale.com.

ADORATION FOR ST. PATRICK’S DAY:  Adoration will take place on St. Patrick’s Day from 3-5pm.  Please put your name in the chart on the altar rails so that we can be sure that Our Lord is not left alone while the rest of us celebrate our Patron Saint.

COMMUNITY CHORAL GROUP:  Following a very successful meeting and great interest, Sing Cois Feile Alive will meet Tuesday 18th of March @ 7pm in St. Itas Community Hall. Thank you to all who attended the meeting and who are keen to support the choral group development. No singing experience is necessary just an open mind, some positivity, and a willingness to learn. This promises to be a great social space. Further details are available from Dearbhla @ West Limerick Resources by email to [email protected] or call 087 6750869.

TEA DANCE IN THE MARQUEE:  Sunday, March 16 dancing to DJ Jeremiah Roche from 4-7pm.  Admission €10.  Teas served.

SHOCK AND DISMAY:  The news of the closure of Esther’s Boutique spread through the female population of Abbeyfeale last weekend like wildfire.  We all depended on Esther for a bit of style when there was an unexpected event to attend or needed the excitement of buying something new to cheer us up.  Even if we were only in for a poke around through the racks the welcome was always the same from Esther whose smiling pleasant manner left us feeling better for meeting her.  A true community person, she never failed to support whatever fundraising was going on and was one of the founder members of the Tidy Towns committee who could be found with her trowel and watering can looking after the flower pots most evenings during the summer.  We wish her good health and a long happy retirement.

.

The group will continue to meet the first Thursday of each month from 7pm – 9pm in St. Ita’s Community Hall, Abbeyfeale. ADHD: More than half of all the mothers reported using acetaminophen while pregnant. The researchers found that children whose mothers used acetaminophen during pregnancy were at a 13 percent to 37 percenthigher risk of later receiving a hospital diagnosis of hyperkinetic
disorder, being treated with ADHD medications or having ADHD-like behaviours at age 7. The longer acetaminophen was taken — that is, intothe second and third trimesters — the stronger the associations. The risks for hyperkinetic disorder/ADHD in children were elevated 50 percent or more when the mothers had used the common painkiller for more than 20 weeks in pregnancy.

NEW ABBEYFEALE BOOK LAUNCHED:  Local writer, Raymond Fennelly, has published a new book entitled “Abbeyfeale In Print. What The Papers Said.”  The book takes a nostalgic journey back in time and delves in to old newspaper accounts of the happenings in Abbeyfeale and surrounding areas up to and including the early decades of the 19th and 20th century. It contains accounts of fairs, frolics, court cases, greedy landlords, battling tenants, rebel risings, great victories, bitter defeats, and memorable sporting and social occasions, all written by people who either lived through these events or received first-hand information from those who had gone before.  Pride of place must be given to local writer and correspondent, the late J. D. Harnett, whose “Historic Sketches of Abbeyfeale” provide a remarkable treasure trove of people, places and times, faithfully recorded and set down for future generations such as ours.  The late James Collins T.D. was Adjutant of the West Limerick Brigade during the War Of Independence and played an active role in the fight for Irish freedom. Following a request from the Bureau Of Military History in 1955, he gave a written submission detailing activities that took place locally during that period, and which has been reproduced in full here.  Father Casey’s Monument stands proudly in The Square. Memories of his heroic efforts against the many injustices inflicted on the people are still fondly recalled, and are reflected on the pages of the various newspapers down through the times.  This collection has been randomly selected. Hopefully, in future years, a more thorough investigation will be carried out and further historic gems revealed.  “Abbeyfeale In Print” is now available in An Siopa Milseán on Main Street. It can also be ordered online from Amazon or borrowed from the local library. Any profits will be donated to charity.

West Junior B League – Round 2

We made the short trip north to Glin for Round 2 of the West Junior B league on Sunday. The match was played in sunny conditions with the wind advantage in favour of Glin in the first half which proved to be instrumental in this game as the home side built a strong lead by half time.

Glin had notched up 2 points before Mark Reidy  picked out Michael Walsh with a ball over the top and Michael found the net. Glin had scored a further 2:06  before we got our next score when Andy Ahern pointed from play. Tomas Ahern made some great saves throughout but was under constant pressure from a fast young Glin forward line who found the net twice more before half time.

The half time score was 4:09 to 1:01.

Playing with the wind in the second half Andy Ahern pointed early and had two screaming chances of goal which went just wide of the post later on. Mark Reidy followed up with the first of his brace of two pointers before Rory and Colm both split the posts. A soft Glin goal soon arrested our gallop before Michael Walsh and Martin Chawke added points.

Mark Reidy landed his second two pointer late in the game before Glin closed out the game with the final point.

The final score was Glin 5:14    Athea 1:10

This game saw the return of Gavin Ambrose and Neilus Hunt as well as a debut for Jamie Collins at the Junior B ranks.

At this stage in the season 21 players have got a run which is great to see. Thanks to the growing group of supporters who were in attendance.
