the Shannon estuary region. Kilnaughtin, Killpadogue, Killmurrilly,

tidal conditions, the pilgrimage will leave Kilrush Marina at 4pm,

IRAQ: Irish Echo
Writers protest Invasion of Iraq
February 16, 2011- By Staff Reporter
Author Roddy Doyle and poet Tom Paulin are among a prominent group of
literary names who signed the letter, which was published in the Irish
Times last week.
Playwright Brian Friel and authors Peter Sheridan and Jennifer
Johnston also added their names to the letter — in total 41 names,
including British writers, were in the newspaper.
They stated their opposition to military action against Iraq, saying:
“The world is poised on the brink of war. We hope that it is not too
late to prevent this conflict and wish to add our voice to the many
millions throughout the world who are calling for the momentum towards
war to be halted.”
Other signatories included “My Left Foot” scriptwriter Shane
Connaughton, dramatist and poet Brendan Kennelly and author Joe
O’Connor, brother of singer Sinead.
“Ostensibly the reason for this war is to check the possibility of
Saddam Hussein using weapons of mass destruction,” the letter said.
“But is it not clear that the most immediate victims of his repressive
government, his own citizens, are those who will suffer terribly in
the event of war?”
The letter asked whether a war to topple Saddam Hussein would leave
the world a safer place.

The Irish Echo
Tales of the Irish Countryside As always, entertained by idle talk
February 15, 2011
By Staff Reporter, By John B. Keane
In the pub the other night I decided to opt out of the conversation.
Very often a man with a good ear for speech can be nobly entertained
if he is prepared to sit quietly and contemplate the ramblings and
musings of his fellows. Davy Gunn, the bodhran-maker, was making a
point.
“If I had enough goats,” Davy said as I sipped my drink in a quiet
corner of the bar, “I’d make pucks of money, but don’t ask me to buy
no bawnie. I made bodhrans of bawnie skins and they made no battle at
all God help us.” A bawnie, of course, is a white goat or white cow.
“The best place for goats I ever came across,” Davy confided, “is
Croagh in the County Limerick. Tis there the good and is.”

ROSARY: By Thomas Philipp Reiter
Brussels, Belgium, Jun 21, 2025 /
In an era where mindfulness apps dominate smartphones and meditation
studios populate urban corners, a new groundbreaking international
study suggests that the ancient Catholic prayer practice of praying
the rosary may offer comparable mental health benefits to
Eastern-inspired meditation techniques. The research, published in the
Journal of Religion and Health, also challenges assumptions made about
traditional practices like the rosary, revealing surprising insights
about who is actually praying the rosary in 2025.
Researchers from Italy, Poland, and Spain surveyed 361 practicing
Catholics to assess the impact of praying the rosary on well-being and
mental health.

What causes a Chiari malformation?
A Chiari malformation happens when the lower back part of your brain
pushes through your spinal canal or the foramen magnum, where your
brain and spinal cord meet. A structural growth abnormality (a
smaller-than-expected size in the area where your cerebellum sits) in
your brain and spinal cord causes pressure in this part of your brain.
The pressure makes your cerebellum grow in a different than expected
location. This happens during fetal development.

The DfT bought 1,475 homes, then passed them to HS2, which aimed to
rent them out to deliver value for money and avoid empty properties in
communities – but 27 per cent lie empty, The Independent can reveal.

NAZI: 25 June 1943 | The construction of gas chamber and crematorium
III was completed at the German Nazi camp Auschwitz II-Birkenau. I
The gas chambers and the undressing room were situated below ground.
In the gas chamber there were floor-to-ceiling columns consisting of
several layers of thick, woven wire with a movable platform inside.
The gas was poured into them from above through openings in the
ceiling. Next to the gas chambers there was an elevator that
transported the bodies to the hall with the crematorium ovens situated
on the ground floor.
The crematorium had five 3-muffled ovens that could burn up to 1,440
corpses per 24-hours (according to the producer – Topf & Soehne
company from Erfurt).
Our podcast explains why in March 1942 the Auschwitz concentration
camp became – at the same time – an extermination centre for Jews.
