MANY CONGRATULATIONS

Firstly, well done to the Athea Tidy Towns Group who have done such amazing work in and around the parish in recent weeks. Last Saturday, they took on the job of weeding the shrubs and areas around the church grounds. The hanging baskets are full of colour, and several premises along the street—such as the Credit Union—have been freshly painted. It all helps to make our little village look lovely and much admired by many.

The Community Council building now features a wonderful window display created by the Craft Group and the Tidy Towns team. If everyone pulled a weed or two when walking past, it would all help—and we’d have the tidiest village to be immensely proud of.

Congratulations are extended to Margaret Stackpoole of Gortnagross, who recently celebrated her 70th birthday along with her family and friends at The Listowel Arms Hotel. A great night was had by all.

A sincere congratulations to everyone who took part in and helped organise the Corpus Christi procession on Saturday evening after Mass. Earlier in the day, it looked as though the wet weather might force the event indoors, but thankfully it cleared up. It was heartwarming to see the First Communion class scatter flower petals throughout the street. The little altars prepared by households along the route added a beautiful touch. The choir sang wonderfully, and the canopy was held over the Monstrance as it was carried down to the bridge and back to the church for Benediction. Well done to everyone involved—truly a lovely occasion.

Congratulations to both Fr. Tom Mangan and Fr. Denis Mullane, who have each received the title of Canon—another great honour!

Sympathy is extended to the Herbert family on the passing of Jim last week. Many came to pay their respects to his wife Mary-Anne and family at Finucane’s Funeral Home on Tuesday evening. Burial followed Requiem Mass on Wednesday at Holy Cross Cemetery. May he rest in peace.

The Funeral Mass for the late John O’Connor, formerly of Markievicz Park and the USA, will take place at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 11th, here in Athea. May he rest in peace.

Graveyard Masses will be held at Holy Cross on Tuesday, July 8th at 7 p.m., and at Templeathea on Tuesday, July 22nd at 7 p.m.

Congratulations to Gerard and Anne Denihan who celebrated their recent birthdays, 90 and 88 respectively, with their families, grandchildren and friends at the Silver Room in Newcastle  West.

Congratulations and well done to the Athea Group who completed the Portuguese Camino last week alongside friends from Listowel and Ballybunion. Despite intense heat, steep descents, a few broken toenails, and some very tired legs, everyone agreed it was well worth the effort and a great experience. Well done also to Fr. Willie Russell, who walked all 125 km!
