SCATTERY ON 23RD JULY

A pilgrimage & historical tour to Scattery Island led by Fr Seán
Hanafin and Dr Declan Downey will take place on 23rd July. It is in
honour of St Senan (488-544 AD), who evangelised the Shannon estuary
region. Kilnaughtin, Killpadogue, Killmurrilly, Monakyle,
Ballinasaggart and Tarmons are associated with him. Due to tidal
conditions, the pilgrimage will leave Kilrush Marina at 4pm, returning
there at 8pm, leaving the island at 7.30pm. Good walking shoes and a
stick for support are essential. Pilgrims are advised to bring their
own refreshments/snacks too. As a coach hire is too expensive,
pilgrims can make their own way by foot, bicycle or car to Kilrush
Marina by 3.30pm – car pooling from Tarbert will be arranged.
Forty-five places on the Scattery Island Tours’ motor launch have been
reserved, so booking and payment on a first come first served basis
for the return tickets on the boat is essential by 5pm on Friday 11th
July at the very latest. No bookings will be taken after that
deadline. Please contact the Parish Office to book and pay for your

Scoil: Carrickerry (B.) My Home District

The name of my home district is Knockfinisk. It is in the Barony of
Shanid. There are twenty one families in Knockfinisk and one hundred
and four people. The family name which is most common there is Windle.
There are three types of houses : thatched houses, slate houses, and
tiled houses.

There are two old people over seventy there who know a little Irish.
Their names are Mr John Windle. Knockfinisk, Carrickerry, Co.
Limerick. and Mrs Mc Mahon Knockfinisk, Carrickerry, Co Limerick.

Houses were more numerous locally in olden times. People emigrated
from there to America in former years.

The land is hilly. Rahilly’s river runs through it. There is a story
told about it. Once upon a time there lived at Rahilly’s river a
family called the Rahilly’s. They were natives of Kerry and they were
known to by robbers. They used to steal cattle and sheep from the
neighbours and kill them.

One night they stole a cow from the O’Connell’s of Clounlahard. It was
a snowy night and the O’Connell’s tracked them in the snow, and they
found out where the cattle went. The guards were sent for and they
found two under-ground cellars for the meat and an under-ground
channel to take the blood to the river. There were two men and a woman
there. They were at once arrested, tried in court, and transported to
Vandeman’s Land. (Bailitheoir Thomas Ahern)

( Note, Van Diemen’s Land, (1642-1855), the south eastern Australian
island colony that became the commonwealth state of Tasmania.)

ULTIMATE Goal; There is only one honor roll or hall of fame that
matters: Heaven. Whether your child makes the school honor roll, gets
inducted into a sports hall of fame, or is accepted into a prestigious
college, pales in comparison to entering eternal life.

The ultimate goal of every Catholic parent is to raise a saint. But
this mission is not easy. It will cost you everything: years of
prayer, hidden sufferings, many tears, and even misunderstandings. Yet
the reward is eternal.
