Many Congratulations

Firstly, I’m sure everyone will be glad to join me in extending heartiest congratulations to Fr. Brendan Duggan, who traveled down from Rockwell College at the weekend to celebrate a Thanksgiving Mass here in Athea, marking his Golden Jubilee—having been ordained 50 years ago to the priesthood. This was also an opportunity for him to show his appreciation to the Athea community for the time he spent in our midst.

Fr. Tom Mangan concelebrated the Mass with him, and Fr. Willie Russell had his accordion at hand, joining the choir to play along—a lovely touch. Fr. Brendan thanked everyone for their kindness during his time in our parish and offered to return to relieve Fr. Tom, Fr. Willie, and Fr. Dan whenever they needed a break.

Incidentally, Fr. Brendan spent many years doing great work in several countries, including Africa, America, and Germany. He also taught in Rockwell College for many years—Lal Browne was one of his students there. At the end of Mass, a beautifully framed preserved plant picture was presented to Fr. Duggan from Athea Parish. He cut the celebratory cake, and everyone enjoyed tea and conversation. Fr. Brendan is wished all the very best for many more years to come.

Another congratulations is extended to Con Kearney of Lower Dirreen, who celebrated his 80th birthday last week. A very proud Cork man, married to a Limerick lady, Sheila, he celebrated this important milestone—where else but in Cork!

Hopefully, all the fathers and grandfathers had a very happy Father’s Day on Sunday and were thoroughly spoiled by their families.

The Corpus Christi procession, which would normally take place next weekend, has been postponed until Saturday evening, June 28th. It will proceed down through the village to the bridge before returning to the church. All households along the route are kindly asked to display holy pictures, small altars, or wildflowers to mark the occasion. All are welcome, especially the First Holy Communion children.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the family, relatives, and friends of the O’Sullivan family of Lower Athea on the recent passing of Mary-Anne White (née O’Sullivan) at UHL last week. She reposed at Reidy’s Funeral Parlour, Newcastle West, where many came to pay their last respects. Requiem Mass was followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery. May the Light of Heaven be hers.

Thought for the week
