Men’s Team Results
Junior B West Division County League Semi-final:
Thursday April 17th 2025 at 7pm in Glin.
Athea v Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan.
Our Junior B team was paired with Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan in the Semi-final of this County League competition last Thursday which was played in Glin. We had met them in round one where they ran out winners by four points in Athea.
We got off to a good start when Mark Reidy put us in front with a two pointer after four minutes. Sean Ryan pointed before Daire O Shea hit the net on 8 minutes. We defended staunchly with Conor Fitzgerald, Andy Ahern and Martin Chawke cutting out opportunity for ABK. Aidan Curry added to the score board in the 20th minute before ABK added a brace. Athea replied with neat points from Jason Kelly and Sean Ryan after good passing movement throughout. ABK landed one more point before half time to leave the score 1:06 to 0:05. In the second half Michael Tierney came on for Luke Gleeson. We were dealt a blow when Martin Chawke sustained an eye injury after a collision and was replaced by Gavin Ambrose. ABK had narrowed the gap to two points when Daire O’Shea pushed us ahead with a point followed by his second goal 10 minutes into the second half. We went 15 minutes without scoring as ABK overhauled our lead scoring 7 points in their purple patch. David and Jack O’Connor and James Broderick came on as subs and this paid dividends as James scored a well worked goal in the 24th minute to restore our lead. Sean Ryan added a further point to give us a three point cushion entering the last five minutes.
The performance was a combination of resolute defending and good passing movements leading to the goals. Jason Kelly and Andy Ahern gave very good accounts of themselves throughout and made key interceptions at critical times.
The panel for this game was big which is great to see at this time of the season.
The final score was 3:08 to 0:14 and we now advance to the Final next Thursday (24th) against Glin.
