GAA: History of the North Kerry Board

When County Convention of 1924 adopted a Listowel motion calling for
the setting up of Divisional Boards to promote Hurling and Football
all over Kerry, the stage was set for eighty six exciting years and
eighty six tumultuous years in North Kerry.

Maurice McGrath, the then Postmaster of Listowel was the genius behind
the motion and it was fitting that he should be the first President of
a North Kerry Board. Six Clubs affiliated for the new League,
Ballydonoghue, Ballylongford, Duagh, Faha, Listowel and Moyvane. Five
pound grant was given to each team, five sets of jersies were to be
obtained, Listowel having their own already and the winners were to
get a set of gold medals while the runners up received a football. The
competition was won by Moyvane in that famous match known as the
“North Kerry All Ireland”. But it was not the first league in North
Kerry. In 1918/20 leagues had been run under the aegis of a league
Board set up under the auspices of Listowel club. Listowel won the
1918 league, and Dromlought (Ballydonoghue) that of 1919/20.

TEMPERANCE: Boston Pilot (1838-1857), Volume 4, Number 47, 20 November 1841

Very Rev. T. Mathew —Progress of Temperance. Last Sunday being the day
which was announced as that on which the Very Rev. Mr. Mathew would
arrive at Newtownsandes, to preach a charity sermon for the completion
of the parish chapel of Murhur, and to administer the sacred pledge of
temperance, twenty two thousand of the sober and exemplary
teetotallers of Clanmaurice, Iraughticonnor, Trugheriackmy, swelled by
countless auxiliary accessions from Glin, Loughill, Askeaton, Adare,
Newcastle, Abbeyfeale, and even from Clare, were assembled at
Newtownsandes as early as eleven o’clock, to welcome the great
benefactor of Irishmen once more to Kerry. The immense, the
overwhelming, and constantly augmenting numbers of the multitude could
not have been less than 100,000. About twelve o’clock the holy
sacrifice of the mass was celebrated in the chapel, and at its
conclusion the illustrious Apostle of Temperance delivered a most
eloquent and impressive sermon, in the course of which he exhorted his
idolizing auditory to contribute each his mite towards the completion
of the temple of God.

After a long and soul-awakening sermon, this Indefatigable labourer in
the vineyard of the Lord, proceeded to administer the sacred pledge to
numerous thousands who were arranged around him, by the praiseworthy
exertions of Mr. Sub-Inspector Fletcher and his efficient police, in
batches varying from 500 to 700 postulants each. Foremost among the
gentlemen who attended and contributed literally to the completion of
the chapel, we observed the Knight of Glin. The Rev. Mr. Mathew was
detained until a late hour by his pious labours in the cause of
temperance, and then retired to the residence of the Rev. Mr. Long,
where a select company was invited by the hospitable parish priest to
meet him. [Limerick Reporter.

The Female Convicts Research Centre promotes interest in the female
convicts of Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), by encouraging and
facilitating research.

From 1803 to 1853, 13,500 female convicts were transported to Van

After serving their sentences they were released into the community.
Their transportation left a lasting legacy. The Female Convicts

SHATTERPROOF: Dr. Tasha Eurich is an organizational psychologist and
researcher and the author of Shatterproof: How to Thrive in a World of
Constant Chaos. Today on the show, Tasha explains why the concept of
resilience rose to prominence in the 2010s, how resilience can be
improved a little as a skill, but is largely an exhaustible capacity,
and how you know when you’re hitting your “resilience ceiling.” We
then talk about the more sustainable skillset and strength of becoming
shatterproof. We discuss the potential to grow forward instead of
simply bouncing back, the psychological needs that have to be met to
become shatterproof, and research-backed tools for thriving in life
instead of just surviving.

Saint John Paul II’s Blood-Stained Shirt Relic —————————-

“You can still see the pope’s blood stains on the relic, and you can
make out three distinct holes,” Sister Maria Rosario of the Daughters
of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul told Rome Reports.

“They are holes caused by bullets. Not because there were three
bullets, but since the shirt was folded over itself, because of how he
was standing.”

Sister Maria also explained how the relic came to them: through nurse
Anna Stanghellini, who had preserved the undershirt in her closet for
many years.
