TAX: By Gordon Deegan
A farmer and company shareholder has lost a €351,545 capital gains tax
(CGT) battle with the Revenue Commissioners.
This follows the Tax Appeals Commission (TAC) ruling that while a
share-for-share exchange at the centre of the tax dispute was effected
for bona fide commercial reasons, it constituted an arrangement of
which the main purpose, or one of the main purposes, was the avoidance
of liability to tax.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY. Will be celebrated in St Mary’s Cathedral,
Killarney on Sunday April 27th.@3pm…Proceeded by the Rosary @ 2.40pm
FEAST of St Brendan on 16th May Bréanainn or Brendan of Ardfert and
Clonfert is the patron of the dioceses of Kerry and Clonfert. The
Annals of Inisfallen give him a birthdate of 486 and a death date of
578 AD.
HISTORY: The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) in
Belfast has a huge collection of emigrants letters, mostly donated by
folk who have recognised letters historical value.
Some are really only of interest to the immediate family (how’s Aunt
Jane’s health, what’s the price of potatoes and is the old brown dog
still alive?). They just get catalogued under the relevant names and
townlands/addresses, and filed away. To access them you need to go to
PRONI, order them up and copy them.
Some letters comment much more widely and where that happens PRONI
often put them on their website so they can be read on-line by a much
wider audience. An example is from 1855 by John Mitchel where the
writer describes life in Tennessee (a “barbarious” place in his
opinion) in considerable detail and then moves to Irish politics, the
chances of Home Rule, possible war between Britain and America and of
civil war in England.

BEES: In the film, starring a young Michael Caine, swarms of bees
crash helicopters, derail trains, and wreak havoc on communities. If
that sounds ridiculous, it was, but then again, these were not just
any bees. These were killer bees. ————-
In reality, when people talk about killer bees, they’re referring to
the Africanized honeybee. Developed in the 50s, the Africanized
honeybee is a hybrid of Western honeybees and East African honeybees

POTATOES; Pilot, Volume 30, Number 26, 29 June 1867
A new style of planting potatoes has been adopted in England, which,
according to various agricultural reports, stands at the head of
potato rising. Neither covering, manuring, cultivating or hoeing are
required, which certainly is an important saving in the heaviest items
of expense, and what is of far more practical importance, a most
fabulous crop is the result. The seed is planted under straw, being
simply dropped on the ground, and a thick layer of straw laid over it,
which takes the place of manure in several ways: first, preventing the
escape of ammonia, and thus governing the growth of vegetation, as is
seen where brush is allowed to remain on the ground in grassland;
second, by keeping the ground moist and pliable during the hot season;
and third, by furnishing through its gradual decay a large amount of
actual nourishment. The crop requires neither cultivating nor hoeing,
as the growth of weeds is entirely smothered, the rank vines
penetrating through the straw, which i3 impervious to the weaker
weeds, that have no strong bulb to them along. The crop, on the
removal of the straw, is found lying on the ground, almost as clean as
if they had been washed, as indeed it has been by all the rains of the
season. It is stated that a thousand bushels to the acre have been
raised by this process.
FLOGGED: A Man Flogged by Two Women. —Last evening the stable yard of
one of our public houses was the scene of an unusual incident. A
stranger, while proceeding along one of our streets, grossly insulted
two young women,, evidently mistaking their character. Without waiting
for “big brothers,” they prepared to resent the insult and inflict
condign punishment upon the insulter. One seized a shillala, and the
other procured an apron full of rocks. At this display of belligerency
the would-be despoiler of female innocence retreated to the stable
yard aforesaid, closely followed by the two young women, one
belabouring him with a club and the other hurling at him stones and
brickbats. At this stage the scene is described as animating in the
extreme. People gathered from all quarters, and before the man could
escape he was most thoroughly flogged, having Ms lip badly cut and one
of his teeth knocked out by a brickbat well aimed, and his back,
shoulders and head well lacerated by blows from the shillala in the
hands of a muscular daughter of Erin. It is the opinion of those who
witnessed the affair that the scamp will be careful in future how he
insults ladies believing them unprotected. —Bangor Times, Ist inst.

MOST NHS services operate a residence-based healthcare system. Most
NHS services are free to people who are ordinarily resident in the UK.
Being ordinarily resident is not dependent on nationality, payment of
UK taxes, National Insurance (NI) contributions, being registered with
a GP, having an NHS Number or owning property in the UK.
Ordinarily resident means living in the UK on a lawful and properly
settled basis for the time being, and you’ll be asked to prove this.

How Love and Belief Conquered Illness- April 15, 2025
by Anddy Ferreira
In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus fell to the ground and prayed, “My
Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I
will, but as you will.” Alone in agony, his sweat fell like drops of
blood. He knew what awaited him — betrayal, abandonment, the lashes,
the thorns, the nails. He bore the weight of every sin, every sorrow,
every suffering. And he did it out of love.
My faith was my anchor. I held onto it when I married the love of my
life at St. Sebastian Church in Woodside, when we dreamed of a future
filled with joy, children, and years together. But less than a year
into our marriage, everything shattered.

St. Bernadette Soubirous is understandably considered the most
beautiful incorrupt saint of the Catholic Church. Her scientifically
inexplicably well preserved body was not embalmed, refrigerated or
oxygenated. Still, she rests peacefully, with slight decay caused by
hasting washing with lye soap at the shocking exhumation discovery of
her preservation 30 years after her burial.
