TOM KENNELLY: The death has taken place of Thomas (Tom) Kennelly of  Barnigue, Carrigkerry,  on Sunday  April 20, in the care of Killeline Nursing Home, Newcastle West. Reposing  took place at St Mary’s Church, Carrigkerry on Wednesday  April  23,from 6pm to 8pm followed by prayers. The Requiem Mass  was concelebrated  by Fr Tom Mangan and Fr Raphael  Okanumeh on Thursday morning at 11.30am. Family members participated throughout the ceremony. Fr Tom in his homily paid a lovely tribute to Tom and Nora, two next door neighbours when he  was  growing up in Glensharrold. Tom’s working life included Shannon Meats Rathkeale, Limerick County Council, Carrigkerry /Old Mill CE Scheme, and West Limerick Rural Employment Scheme. He was also involved in farming and was handy at block and timber work. During his time on the Carrigkerry/Old Mill CE Scheme he was involved in the building of the Carrigkerry Grotto to mark the new Millennium. Following this Tom built his own private Shrine to Our Lady in 2004. Tom will be remembered for his great love of music, song, dance and his association with the  Wren, being a lifelong member of the Glensharrold Group and also with Carrigkerry who won All Irelands titles, being a noted Bodhran player.

Symbols brought to the Altar defining his path through life included a bodhran which Tom played over the years.  A photo with a trophy won in a competition. He was a founding member of the Glensharrold Wren Group. He played the fiddle and the Bodhran and enjoyed the competition with his fellow players.  A family photo of Tom, Nora and  daughter Margaret. 3 pages of artwork showing farm pictures created by his grandchildren, Jayden, Lucie and Jonah to show Tom’s love for the land. Tom embraced all ages from the basic  Pierce Mowing Bar, Hay Turner, and Racker to the most modern of machinery. A Cross and Chain and Holy Water. Tom always wore  the chain around his neck to show his religious devotion to his church and parish. He rarely missed Mass, other ceremonies or funerals while he was able to attend. The Holy water which he sprinkled around before leaving the house. Aine Moloney supplied the music and hymns which enhanced the ceremony. Burial  took place afterwards in Kilbradern Cemetery. The Glensharrold and Carrigkerry Wren members combined to give him a rousing musical send off. Donie Nolan sang Down by Glensharrold Side, which was a sad but lovely farewell.  Sympathy to  wife Nora, daughter Margaret and partner James, grandchildren Jayden, Lucie and Jonah, nieces, nephews, sisters in law, brothers in law, family, friends and neighbours. May he rest in Peace.
