TRÓCAIRE 2025: As Lent approaches, our thoughts turn to Trócaire and the communities
throughout the world with whom they work. This year, Trócaire’s Lenten campaign focuses on
Guatemala, a country which is one of the least responsible for causing the climate crisis yet is
bearing the brunt of the consequences. This week we tell this story through, Ilma, Julio . LIma and
Julio have four children, and you can see their photo on our Trócaire box this year. They depend on
farming for their livelihood. Like many families and communities Trócaire work with, they are
experiencing increasingly erratic weather patterns due to climate change. This is having life-changing
consequences on their livelihoods, wellbeing and future. Find out more at trocaire.org

The prevalence of scurvy in this place is frightful, and every day fresh victims are added to the list of
sick. We can scarcely obtain anything here but rusty bacon and flour, without the sign of any
vegetables; and this, with the constant exposure to every inclemency of the weather, will affect the
strongest constitution. There are three I saw the other day in a dreadful state, unable to move or

speak, whose condition I will not trust my pen to write, for fear you should think I am exaggerating;
but leave your imagination to picture the direst form of that terrible disease, aggravated by neglect.
I send you their names, to verify my statement, and for the purpose of directing the attention of
their friends or relations to them. They are as follows:—Hayes, native of Abbeyfeale, County
Limerick; Cahill, Newcastle West, County Limerick; Donegan, native of Charleville. County Cork. This
last is getting somewhat better, but poor Cahill is very bad. Another man, named Hartnett, of Kerry,
started from here when extremely ill, and succeeded in reaching Queenstown after great difficulty. I
hope that with the improvement in living and proper attendance he will be able to obtain there, that
he is getting better."

MORIARTY: How we arrive into Ireland is central to the nature of our belonging here. This is
something the late John Moriarty realised and wrote about.5 Do we descend upon this island from a
cloud, wrapped in a mist, like the Dananns? Or do we sail across the rough seas, like the Milesians,
with their flotilla of ships – a Spanish Armada of the prehistoric world – to take Ireland, partly due to
jealous longing, and partly for vengeance? If we do that, we will never belong here, and we might
end up like one of those voyagers of old, setting sail into the perilous ocean of the west, chasing
dreams and shadows in the far-off turmoil of a tumultuous Atlantic. Taken from
