DAN HARTNETT: The sudden and unexpected death of Dan Hartnett, Churchtown Newcastle West (Killard, Ardagh) took place on Friday March 14. Reposing was held at Riedy’s Funeral Home Newcastle West on Wednesday March 19, from 6-8pm, followed by removal to the Church of the Immaculate Conception Newcastle West . Canon Frank O’Dea celebrated his Requiem Mass at 11.30am on Thursday and family members participated, with hymns and music by Maura and Donie. Symbols representing his life were taken to the altar by his seven grandchildren. They included items showing his love for family, farming, reading, entertainment etc.
Burial took place afterwards in Calvary Cemetery close to his home. Sympathy to his wife Mary, sons Patrick, Michael, Daniel, daughter Michelle, grandchildren, son-in-law Michael, daughters-in-law Lisa, Michelle, Lieve, brother, sisters, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, relatives and friends. On the land and nature was Dan’s passion throughout life, he was an agricultural contractor and farmer. He was mechanically minded and caring for his animals and stray pets. May he rest in Peace.
KATHLEEN KENNY: The death has occurred of Kathleen Kenny (née Woulfe) Dartry, Dublin 6. Retired NT, St. Anne’s Milltown. Late of Ardagh, Co. Limerick, Sandymount and Oranmore, (peacefully, after a long illness), in the excellent care of St. John’s House, Dublin on Wednesday March 19. Predeceased by husband Donal and infant James, sisters Noreen, Margaret (Peggy) and brother Dick. Kathleen lay in repose in Massey Bros Funeral Home, Goatstown on Friday March 21, from 6pm – 8pm. Her Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday March 22 at 10am in St. Columbanus, St. Gall and Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Milltown followed by burial in Mount Venus Cemetery, Rathfarnham.
Sympathy to her children Bryan, Miriam, Yvonne, Conor, Ida and Norma Jean, their spouses Amanda, Donal, Hugh, Susan, Marc and Norma Jean’s partner Ultan, grandchildren Joshua, David, Isobel, Tara, Aoibhín, Cathal, Alice, Hannah and Helen, Kathleen’s brother Liam and sister-in-law, Mary Rose. She will also be sadly missed by her many nephews, nieces, extended Kenny and Woulfe families, wide circle of great friends and neighbours. May she rest in Peace.
MONTHS MIND: The Months Mind Mass for Patsy Harnett Ardagh will be celebrated on Friday March 28 at 6.30pm in St Molua’s Church Ardagh.
CAR PARKING: Could all Mass goers at Carrigkerry Church please be mindful when parking their car for Mass as some local residents are being penned in during mass times which hinders their access.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS:- takes place every Thursday at 7pm during Lent in Newcastle West church. All are welcome.
LOTTERY DRAW: The Ardagh Development Association and Saint Kieran’s GAA joint weekly lottery draw took place on Monday March 17.The numbers drawn were 5,9,22,24, and there was no winner of the €6,000 Jackpot. Congratulations to the five lucky dip winners who received € 40 each: 8 Plus GD c/o Dinny Greaney, Diarmuid Mc Sweeney, Kilcolman, Alec JC O’Sullivan, c/o Dawn, Hannah Greene, Ardagh, Kathleen Nolan, Athea. Next week’s Jackpot will be €6,100. People can play online using club force on the club’s Facebook page, with 6pm on Monday evening the deadline. The tickets are also on sale at the usual outlets, and all support will be appreciated. Both organisations wish to thank all the people for their continued support.
RADIO DRAW: Congratulations to Teresa Haugh from Rathkeale, who won €250 in the West Limerick 102fm 50/50 draw, held on Friday March 21. The tickets cost €2, or 3 for €5 and they are available from volunteers, in local shops, (including Moloneys Carrigkerry, and from the radio station. All support will be appreciated. GAELIC GAMES: Congratulations to Tony Doyle from the St Kieran’s club who has been selected as part of the Limerick Masters Hurling panel for this year’s competition. The Ita Madigan Memorial Under 13 Hurling Tournament was won by Askeaton/,Ballysteen/Kilcornan and St Kieran’s were the Shield winners. Congratulations to both and the presentations were held on Sunday March 9.
SOCCER NEWS: Creeves Celtic defeated Newcastle West Town at home by 2-1 in the Premier Division of the Desmond League on Sunday March 16. Eoin Mc Enery and Tom Shanahan scored. Kilcolman Rovers defeated Dromore United B 2-1 away in Division 3, with Michael Cremin and an own goal. Carrig Celtic had no match.
GREYHOUND MEETING: Greyhound racing continues at Limerick Greyhound Track, and it is an enjoyable night out. The restaurant is open every Thursday and Saturday night and can be booked on www.limerickgreyhoundstadium.ie The annual Con and Anne Kirby Memorial (Celebrating 12 years) greyhound stake sponsored by JP and Noreen Mc Manus will be held at Limerick Greyhound Stadium from Saturday March 22 to Saturday April 19. All the Limerick GAA Clubs will be allocated a greyhound, and prizes will be awarded to the final six as in previous years. Ballymac Lucia is the St Kieran’s dog and Razldazl Edward (one of the favourites) is the Old Mill Ladies Football dog. Admission is € 10 for adults, and free entry to children with a paying adult.
WALKING TRAILS: Wonder Wander Foynes and Newcastle West walking trail brochure maps were launched at Foynes Library at 10am and Newcastle West Library at 1pm on Tuesday March 25. The maps include the architectural heritage of both towns, adding to the main attractions at Foynes Flying Maritime Museum and Newcastle West Desmond Castle.
DAFFODIL DAY: Friday March 28 is Daffodil Day in aid of the Irish Cancer Society and events will be held around the locality. A Coffee Morning will be held in the Red Door Gallery in Newcastle West and collections will be held in different locations. People are asked to be generous with their donations.
CLUB DRAW: The Limerick GAA Club draw for 2025 is now open for membership. The Saint Kieran’s club are promoting it, and the first draw will be held on Saturday March 29. The entry fee for the ten draws is € 100, and € 21,000 will be given out in prize money each month. The first prize is € 10,000, 2nd prize € 3,000, 3rd prize € 2,000, 4th prize € 1,000, 5th prize is an exclusive star prize, ( €500 Woodlands Hotel Voucher) and 4 prizes of € 500, four prizes € 250, and 17 prizes of € 100. To join contact the local St Kieran’s club members in person, or online through the Club force App with direct options available. The club will receive 50% of all membership received which is vital for the running of it over the year.

MASS CHANGES: The changeover of Masses in the Shannon West Pastoral Unit takes place on the weekend of April 5/6. The new mass times will be Saturday April 5, Kilcolman Vigil Mass at 7.30pm and Sunday April 6, Loughill Mass at 9.30am.
