MOUNT MELLERAY: Our new PP Fr. Tom Mangan wrote the following in our parish newsletter this weekend to mark the closure of Mount Melleray. “Since the Mount Melleray .Abbey closed yesterday, it is appropriate to say something of its history. The Cistercian Order began in 1098 when a group of Benedictine monks left their monastery and founded a new monastery at Citeaux where they wanted to live the Rule of St. Benedict (480-547) more faithfully. The Cistercians first came to Ireland in 1142 when, at the invitation of St. Malachy of Armagh, they established Mellifont Abbey. Over the following four centuries there were about 40 Cistercian monasteries established in Ireland e.g. Abbeyfeale in 1188, Manister, Abington, Holy Cross, Hore Abbey near Cashel and Inislounaght Abbey, near Clonmel. After the Reformation in the sixteenth century all the monasteries in Ireland were suppressed so Irish men and women wanting to become monks and nuns had to travel to the continent. At the beginning of the nineteenth century there were over sixty Irish and English monks in the monastery of Melleray in Brittany, France but the monks were expelled from the monastery during the French Revolution of the early 1830s and in December1831 the Irish and English monks arrived in Ireland by boat, settling in Rathmore, Co. Kerry, under the leadership of Fr. Vincent Ryan. They came to Cappoquin, where they founded Mount Melleray in memory of the motherhouse on Wednesday, May 30, 1832. On the feast of St. Bernard, on August 20, 1833, the foundation stone was blessed by the local bishop. The monastery was completed before the famine. In 1878, Mt. Melleray established Mount St. Joseph Abbey near Roscrea , Co. Tipperary. In 1938, Mt. Melleray established New Mellifont Abbey, Co. Louth on land that had belonged to the original Mellifont Abbey 800 years before. Mount Melleray College closed in June 1974. Over 10,000 students were educated at the schools of Mt. Melleray between 1840 and 1974 and several hundred of them were subsequently ordained priests for ministry in Ireland and abroad. Over 1,140 monks worked at Mount Melleray in its 193 year existence.
NEW ABBEYFEALE BOOK LAUNCHED: Local writer, Raymond Fennelly, has published a new book entitled “Abbeyfeale In Print. What The Papers Said.” The book takes a nostalgic journey back in time and delves in to old newspaper accounts of the happenings in Abbeyfeale and surrounding areas up to and including the early decades of the 19th and 20th century. It contains accounts of fairs, frolics, court cases, greedy landlords, battling tenants, rebel risings, great victories, bitter defeats, and memorable sporting and social occasions, all written by people who either lived through these events or received first-hand information from those who had gone before. Pride of place must be given to local writer and correspondent, the late J. D. Harnett, whose “Historic Sketches of Abbeyfeale” provide a remarkable treasure trove of people, places and times, faithfully recorded and set down for future generations such as ours. The late James Collins T.D. was Adjutant of the West Limerick Brigade during the War Of Independence and played an active role in the fight for Irish freedom. Following a request from the Bureau Of Military History in 1955, he gave a written submission detailing activities that took place locally during that period, and which has been reproduced in full here. Father Casey’s Monument stands proudly in The Square. Memories of his heroic efforts against the many injustices inflicted on the people are still fondly recalled, and are reflected on the pages of the various newspapers down through the times. This collection has been randomly selected. Hopefully, in future years, a more thorough investigation will be carried out and further historic gems revealed. “Abbeyfeale In Print” is now available in An Siopa Milseán on Main Street. It can also be ordered online from Amazon or borrowed from the local library. Any profits will be donated to charity.

Under the regime they are living in very difficult times the army have taken over and won’t allow these young girls go to school. FUNDRAISER FOR MOYVANE CHURCH AND A DONATION TO THE AXEL HORGAN FUND: Axel Horgan from Listowel was two years old last May, he is the grandson of Margaret Curtin nee O’Donnell formerly of Clash, Abbeyfeale. Mairead Hanlon who along with Fr. Brendan Walsh PP of Moyvane and a committee of local people have organised a fundraising concert with Michael English in Moyvane Church on Sunday, March 23 writes the following; “Axel is one of only 200 children worldwide who suffers from Cloves Syndrome, which is an extremely rare congenital disorder, it is characterised by a combination of vascular, skin, spinal, bone and joint abnormalities. In August last year Axel started an oral chemotherapy drug used to treat stage 4 cancer. This drug was used to target his overgrowth syndrome. However, an unfortunate result of this gruelling treatment resulted in a complete speech regression for Axel, as the drug had an effect on his brain. At the time Axel was speaking many words for his age, but because of the side effects of the chemotherapy he was on to shrink the overgrowth, it also had an effect on other areas of the body including the brain. So, as a result he had a full speech regression. The chemotherapy had to be stopped immediately in order that his speech could be restored again. In February this year his parents Eddie and Sarah learned the devastating news that Axel’s left leg would have to be amputated. Unfortunately, this is going to happen during the month of January. Further MRI’s and x-rays have been done on his right leg, which is showing signs of deterioration also. Regretfully his right leg will also have to be amputated, more than likely in the Summer of 2025.The family travelled to Paris last year to undergo further treatment, which was carried out by a vascular anomalies specialist, Professor Canaud. The family now have to travel to Paris every 6 weeks for further treatments. The fingers on Axel’s right hand are also affected and will require debulking and wiring surgery, as they will not be functional as he ages. Despite Axel’s tough start in life, he is a beautiful little boy, as both Fr. Brendan and I experienced when we visited their home on two occasions recently. As well as the trips to Paris to attend the hospital, Axel has to attend Crumlin Children’s Hospital, Dublin three times per month, which involves seeing his neurologist, endocrinologist, gastro consultant, as well as Axel’s consultant Professor Alan Irvine. Attending both hospitals in Paris and Dublin involves significant travel and accommodation costs, a cost which has to be paid by Eddie and Sarah. Axel requires a significant amount of physiotherapy, but because not enough sessions are provided through our health system in this country, it is vital to have extra sessions of physio privately per week. Thus incurs a significant extra cost. Absolutely, none of this is funded by the HSE or any other means.
The reason we have nominated Axel’s charity to benefit from our concert next March is to help ease the financial burden on them presently and going forward.
Our wonderful fundraising draw will help towards Axel’s medical expenses.
Our contribution to this most worthy cause will be dependent on the amount of tickets sold and the support we receive from Parishioners and the wider public.
Our amazing prize for the draw includes return flights to New York for two people and 4 nights in the Fitzpatrick Hotel, Manhattan.
