FULL Moon was on the 13th. Many had a nasty surprise for the New Year,
with snow, frost and power outages. Very few are now prepared for a
power outage. After one of the heaviest snowfalls in years there are
reports of flat-roofs caving in. Thanks to all the volunteers who
helped during the emergency. More use of locals should be allowed to
cater for fallen trees and clearing roads. Insurance is the greatest
worry, as countless are willing to help.
FIRE: Tens of thousands of people are still without power because of
the blazes. Around 200,000 customers in Los Angeles county and nearly
26,000 in neighbouring Ventura county are still affected, according to
tracking website PowerOutage.us. Providers saying they are working
around the clock to restore power as soon as possible.

Chair of the ICMSA Farm Business Committee Pat O’Brien called on the
Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue to
“go one hugely positive step further” to extend the grant to farmers
regardless of stocking rate. “The ‘trailing shoe’ system of low
emission slurry spreading has multiple environmental benefits, but it
is an extremely expensive piece of equipment for any one individual
which also requires a large tractor to operate it effectively.

In a hilly section of the Bronx you will find Manhattan University, a
private, Catholic university established in 1853 by the Brothers of
the Christian Schools, a lay order dedicated to education. The
university has also become home to a large collection of holy relics.
Founded by Jean-Baptiste de La Salle in 1680, the Brothers of
Christian Schools began to set up schools for poor boys to receive an
education. The order quickly spread across France and other European
countries and eventually spread around the world. The order is
currently headquartered in Rome.

This year marked JSTOR Daily’s tenth anniversary, so it’s been
particularly rewarding to look back at our most popular stories of
2024. We’re extremely grateful for the enthusiasm and engagement of
our readers, which is conveyed to us via email, social media, and data
analytics. We seek out stories and writers that connect with our
audience. Sometimes that’s a science (see: data analytics), sometimes
that’s an art (see: photographs of ghosts). However we get there,
we’re delighted that we seem to be delighting everyone, including
ourselves. Enjoy this baker’s dozen of our most popular stories

CARS: China’s expansive electronics industry also gave manufacturers a
head start in battery technology know-how, he claims. As early as
2002, the Chinese government recognised that investing in electric
mobility could give them a global advantage, as well as providing a
solution for the relentless smog hanging over the country’s cities.
The government poured subsidies into the industry, with some pure EV
startups quickly becoming household names. Chinese companies also
switched to lithium iron phosphate batteries, known as LFP batteries,
which are safer and cheaper—although slightly lower energy
density—than the lithium nickel manganese cobalt batteries preferred
by Western companies. The country struck multiple international deals
guaranteeing companies access to a steady supply of raw materials
needed for battery production.
