SONGS FROM OUR YOUTH: John Nelligan continues his research on the back story of the songs that were popular in his youth and this week he’s dealing with my deceased mother’s favourite song, ‘Nora’ as sung by Johnny McEvoy. He writes; “ The backstory to the lyrics would bring a tear to the proverbial glass eye, with the original words having their inception as a poem that was written by George Washington Johnson, a Canadian schoolteacher, in1864 in tribute to, his future wife, Margaret (Maggie) Clark, who as well as being his pupil, was three years his junior. They fell in love and were married in October 1864. Shortly, thereafter, Maggie was taken ill and succumbed to her illness in May of 1865. It was during their courtship, when George and Maggie strolled the countryside near her home and would end their stroll at an old sawmill beside theTwenty Mile Creek, that George was inspired to pen the poem “When You And I Were Young Maggie”,in which he sees their love, like the stream, as flowing forever. The poem was, originally, published in1864 as part of his “Maple Leaves” collection. James Austin Butterfield set the poem to music, and it became popular all over the world. It was first published by Butterfield in Indianapolis in 1866. Sean O’Casey, in his play “The Plough and the Stars”, refashioned, in substantial manner, the original words into “Nora”. In the play Nora Clitheroe asks her husband Jack to sing a song – when Jack suggests “Since Maggie Went Away” Nora responds that “it’s too sad” and requests that he sings “When You Said You Loved Me” and in that moment “Nora” is, simultaneously, conceived and delivered into music legend, to the eternal gratitude of recording artists such as Johnny McEvoy (1968), De Dannan (1978) and Foster and Allen (1983). It should be noted that O’Casey’s future wife Eileen played the role of Nora when the play was first performed in London. The role had a special place in her heart, so much so that she was moved to tears when Aidan O’Hara sang “Nora” in the spring of 1976 at an Irish/Canadian studies conference in St John’s, Newfoundland.
The violets were scenting the woods, Nora,
Displaying their charms to the breeze,
When I first said I loved only you, Nora,
And, you said you loved only me.
The chestnut blooms gleamed through the glade, Nora,
A robin sang out from a tree,
When I first said I loved only you, Nora,
And, you said you loved only me.
The golden-robed daffodils shone, Nora,
And, danced in the breeze on the lea,
When I first said I loved only you, Nora,
And, you said you loved only me.
The trees, birds and bees sang a song, Nora,
Of happier transports to be,
When I first said I loved only you, Nora,
And, you said you loved only me.
Our dreams, they have never come true, Nora,
Our hopes, they were never to be,
Since I first said I loved only you, Nora,
And, you said you loved only me.
