Kerry.
Wednesday, 19 November 1941
Timothy O’Sullivan asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether his attention has been directed to the widespread and destructive flooding that has taken place in certain districts in North Kerry, with the result that many people are now homeless; whether the Government intends to come to the help of those affected, [710] what form that help will take and when will it be available.
Dr. Francis Constantine Ward I am aware of the extent of the flooding which has occurred in North Kerry, near Listowel, having directed an immediate inspection to be made in order to ascertain the full facts. The question of the immediate alleviation of the distress occasioned has been promptly dealt with by the Kerry Board of Health and Public Assistance who have provided temporary accommodation and assistance for all the families affected, and by a local relief committee which has been formed and which has received from the Red Cross Society a contribution of £200. It is necessary to emphasise that the question of the further steps to deal with conditions created by the flooding is not mainly one for the Department of Local Government and Public Health but will be examined by that Department in conjunction with the other Departments and interests concerned.
North Kerry. Thursday, 7 November 1946
Patrick Finucane asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware of the considerable [521] damage to land and crops which is arising in North Kerry owing to flooding caused by the breaking down of river embankments; further, that in some cases losses up to £500 have been suffered; if he will state if it is the intention of the Land Commission to see that the necessary repairs are carried out promptly; and also whether some scheme will be introduced to compensate persons for losses sustained from this cause.
Seán Moylan I have been informed of the regrettable damage to which the Deputy’s question refers and the Land Commission have sanctioned considerable grants for the repair of breached embankments protecting several estates affected. This work will be expedited as much as possible.
There is no fund available to my Department for the payment of compensation for losses caused by flooding.
