  FAIR OF ATHEA

This Saturday, November 9th, sees the Annual Fair of the Village taking place and hopefully it will be a nice dry day for the occasion .The Craft Fair will be held at the Hall also on the day, with lovely bits and pieces, I’m sure made by the Craft Group who meet here in the Hall every Wednesday.  Teas and coffees will also be available. I remember the Fair Day years ago when my mother would be getting bones from our local McMahon Butchers to make soup for all the customers in our Bar at Top of The Town .We would be saving our money for weeks to go down to Enright’s Shop to buy water guns and whatever took our eye on their shop window which they would have on display in the run up to the big day .Things change of course but still thankfully Athea has managed to keep up The Tradition of the Fair Day.

Unfortunately our Premier Junior A Team were unable to bring the Cup home to Athea on Saturday last, having been beaten by a very strong unbeaten Cappagh team. However they must be commended for trying their best and for getting to the Final and for attending all the training sessions despite many of them having to travel from various colleges and distances each week. Well done to all involved in getting them so far and here’s to next year.

Congrats to our neighbours St. Kieran’s who had a great victory over Mungret -St Pauls and Abbeyfeale unfortunately were in the same boat as Athea however well done to all for giving the supporters a day out to cheer on their teams.

Congrats to Rebbeca Collins of Templeathea, daughter of Rita and Tom, who celebrated her 18th birthday along with family and friends at Brown Joe’s on Saturday night last. All had a great night.

The Tidy Towns have The Paudie Coffey Band playing here in the Colbert Memorial Hall on Saturday night next 9th Nov from 9–11. All are welcome for what promises to be a great night of Dancing after the Fair Day – you can even bring your willies!

Another fund-raiser for the Athea Playground is the one night staging of The Beauty Queen Of Leenane here in Athea on Saturday Nov 30th. No doubt there will be great demand for this so early booking is advisable.

I know we all give out about all the leaves that are falling and having to tidy them up but aren’t we blessed with the lovely mild weather we have at the moment and the lovely Autumn colours along the roads on the trees.

A few lines on Autumn:

Along hedges so finely spun

Webs glisten in the morning sun.

Trees show off their glorious gown of fiery red and russet brown.

A range of colour,  an uplifting time of year,

The peacefulness of the woodlands creates a magical atmosphere.

A golden season to explore through mother natures open door.
