SONGS FROM OUR YOUTH – FOLLOW ME UP TO CARLOW:  John Nelligan has been researching songs from his youth and continues his research with the following:  ( He has even managed to find links with Trumps victory and the strategy employed by the Irish at the famous victory in Glenmalure….).

“The lyrics are by Patrick Joseph McCall (1861-1919). The MacCahir Óg, in the opening line was Brian MacCahir Óg Kavanagh, and was Fiach’s brother-in-law and the FitzWilliam was the, then, Lord Deputy of Ireland. The tune is reputed to have been played by MacHugh O’Byrne’s pipers as he marched on Carlow after defeating the English troops at Glenmalure on August 25th, in the year of 1580.

O’Byrne commanded a strength of 700 against a strength of 2,000 under the command of Baron Arthur Grey. O’Byrne pioneered a strategy, whereby the enemy forces were drawn deeper and deeper into the glen that was covered by dense foliage, thereby affording O’Byrne’s forces plenty of cover. As the English attempted to escape the glen by climbing the steep slopes  of the valley, the Boys in Green threw off their cover and ambushed the enemy forces, who, as their discipline collapsed, turned and fled down the valley and in so doing, suffered dead and wounded of up to 800.

Back in the day, victories such as Glenmalure, although not as rare as hens’ teeth, were not commonplace, hence when victories were achieved, they were exulted in song and lore.

It is not beyond the bounds of possibility, that Sitting Bull, having become acquainted with O’Byrne’s strategy from the army manuals of the day, employed the self-same strategy to defeat Custer at the battle of the Little Big Horn on June 25th & 26th in the year of 1876. Stranger things have happened – such as Trump, in securing his return to the White House also won the popular vote as well as a majority in the Senate and the House of Representatives and control of the Supreme Court through his and other Republican nominations to that Court!”

Follow Me Up To Carlow

Lift MacCahir Óg your face,

Brooding o’er the old disgrace.

That black FitzWilliam stormed your place,

And drove you to the Fern.

Grey said victory was sure,

Soon the firebrand he’d secure.

Until he met at Glenmalure,

Fiach MacHugh O’Byrne.

Chorus

Curse and swear Lord Kildare,

Fiach will do what Fiach will dare.

Now FitzWilliam have a care,

Fallen is your star, low.

Up with halbert, out with sword,

On we go, for by the Lord,

Fiach MacHugh has given the word,

Follow me up to Carlow.

See the swords of Glen Imayle,

Flashing o’er the English Pale.

See all the children of the Gael,

Beneath O’Byrne’s banners.

Rooster of the fighting stock,

Would you let a Saxon Cock,

Crow out upon the Irish rock?

Fly up and teach him manners.

Chorus

From Tassagart to Clonmore,

Flows a stream of Saxon gore.

Och, great is Rory Óg O’More,

At sending loons to Hades.

White is sick and Lane is fled,

Now for black FitzWilliam’s head.

We’ll send it over, dripping red,

To Queen Liza and the ladies.

Chorus

VISIT OF RELICS:  Blessed Carlo Acutis, a saint for our time and a model for the young. Carlo Acutis was born to Italian parents in London on the 3rd May 1991. He was exceptionally gifted in working with computers, as well as computer programming. He also liked film editing, website creation, and editing and laying out small publications. He liked to play PlayStation but he kept it to a minimum not to waste too much time on it. He had a deep devotion to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and so he developed a website which catalogued The Eucharistic Miracles of the World. Carlo contracted leukaemia. The doctor treating Carlo asked him if he was suffering much pain and he responded, “There are people who suffer much more than me.” He died on 12 October 2006 when he was only fifteen. Before his death, Carlo said, “I am happy to die because I lived my life without wasting even a minute of it on anything displeasing to God”. This is what he asks of us, that we may not waste our lives on pointless things that don’t please God. In 2018, Pope Francis confirmed his life of heroic virtue and declared him ‘Venerable’. A miracle was then attributed to his intercession from 2013, which involved a young boy from Brazil who suffered from a rare pancreatic disease. Pope Francis confirmed this miracle in early 2020, and Carlo was beatified on 10th October the same year. Carlo is a role model and inspiration for teenagers striving to be both holy and normal in today’s society.  You are invited to join Ballyferriter parish as they welcome the Carlo Acutis relic on Friday, November 22 @ 2pm. He retired in June 2010 and later that year his autobiography “The Governor” was published. In 2013 he wrote a book on parenting with the title ‘Parenting – raising your child in Ireland today’, with all royalties going to Barnardos, the children’s charity. Nowadays he delivers talks on a wide range of subjects to communities, voluntary groups, workers and students. He is an active supporter of many charitable organisations. His philosophy is that change, personal or otherwise, cannot be enforced on people, believing that real and meaningful change only comes about through dialogue, consent and agreement. He is convinced that human beings change from the inside out and suggests that the big challenge for all of us is to find the humanity in others and then to nurture it. The more we are in touch with our own humanity the more likely we are to treat others with humanity – show respect to gain respect.
