FARMERS have been feeling the pinch, as the first half of the year has been tight on cash flow, which has resulted in many farmers doing all of the work on their own. An overbearing workload without any assistance can lead to burn-out, fatigue and mental health issues.
Farmers need to prioritise time away from the farm every now and then in order to look after themselves and spend time with family, and automation can be a huge aid in this.
Automation can cut down on the amount of labour required on farm and can make the farm a more attractive place to work during the busy time of the year.

KERRY.— Death of a Venerable Nun.— The death of Sister Mary Gertrude O’Connor (known for upwards of a generation as Mother Gertrude), of the Presentation Convent, Listowel, is an event deserving of more than local or ordinary notice (says the Daily Nation.) For nearly 51 years this truly excellent lady occupied a prominent and honoured place in the religious life of her native county. Entering the Listowel Convent on the 15th of August, 1849, her religious life may be said to have synchronised with the life of that distinguished branch of the great Presentation Community, and the remarkable growth of that Convent, both in usefulness as a educational institution and in size, is in no small measure due to her influence and labours. Mother Gertrude was born in Tralee about 76 years ago. Her father held a commission in the British Army, served with distinction under Moore and Wellington, and the hero of Corunna is said to have died in his arms. The Very Rev. John O’Connor. D.D., who, for many years occupied a prominent place in the clerical life of his native diocese, and was one of the organisers of that brave band of Irishmen who went to the assistance of Pope Pius the Ninth in the early stage of his struggle with the infidel makers of modern Italy, and who, led by his fiery missionary zeal went abroad while yet a young curate, where he died some years ago, was a brother of Mother Gertrude. Another distinguished brother was Dr. Morgan O’Connor who died universally respected and regretted a few years ago in Wagga, New South Wales.

FOR a decade I lived in the world of blindness. I married a wife I’d never seen. We had children I could know only with my heart and hands. I wrote books I never read.
In the Spring of 1947 I was rapidly losing the little sight I had brought back from the war 18-months
before. I lived in the Sarthe Valley of France, where I studied with the famed Benedictine monks of Solesmes. .Alone at night, I puttered about my room, trying to ignore the blindness that was walling me in. But my lamp reminded me each time I turned toward it Sight had faded until the bare globe was like candlelight seen through fog. At twenty six, I looked on this as the end of a life of adventure begun in my teens when I had gone to France to study medicine. Before my twentieth birthday I had been assistant to the doctor in charge of the insane asylum of Tours, had worked in the French underground and had fled the invading Germans. Then there had been nearly three years in the
Pacific where Bomb concussions had damaged my vision ( see paper for more)

CIVIL WAR: Echoes of War is a Royal Irish Academy funded project investigating the aftermath of the Civil War across North Kerry, a region where the conflict left a uniquely traumatic legacy. The project explores how much violence/intimidation/fear continued to resonate in local everyday life in the years that followed. It examines how families and communities here dealt with the death, injury and loss of loved ones caused by the struggle. It also charts the history of locally initiated commemorative projects to both pro and anti-Treaty forces in North Kerry.

The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary: 7th October
The tradition of blessing roses on this day is an old one. It is recorded in the Annals of the Rosary that many favours have been obtained, both spiritual and temporal, through the virtue of these blessed roses. We are told that thousands of sick persons have been cured by using them devoutly.
This feast was established by Pope Saint Pius V to commemorate the victory of the Christian naval fleet of the Holy League, which contained the Papal States, against the Muslim Turks of the Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Lepanto off the coast of Turkey on 7th October 1571. The Christian fleet was commanded by Don Juan of Austria. The Christian victory in that sea battle was a hugely significant one for the future of Christianity in Europe, in that if the Christians had lost that battle, much of Europe would probably be Muslim today. Saint Pius V, who was a Dominican and Pope from 1566 until 1572, credited Our Lady with the victory since on the eve of the battle he had recited the Rosary as he led a Rosary Procession, praying for success the following day. The Rosary was revealed to Saint Dominic (1170 – 1221) by the Blessed Mother about the beginning of the thirteenth century and is one of the most beautiful of all devotions. After the victory Pope Saint Pius V declared that “The Feast of Our Lady of Victory” would be celebrated on 7th October the following year (1572). He himself died earlier that year on 1st May 1572. His successor, Pope Gregory XIII, changed the title of the feast to “The Feast of the Holy Rosary”. In 1960 Saint Pope John XXIII changed the title to “The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary”. The feast is a celebration of the great prayer which the Rosary is, as we meditate on key events or moments in the lives of Jesus and his mother Mary.
Feast of St. John Henry Newman is celebrated on Wednesday 9th October. One of the great scholars of his time and founder of the Catholic University in Dublin in 1850. “A friend to Ireland, a friend to all in need”. Feast of the Pope St. John XXIII (1881-1963) is celebrated on Friday 11th October. He called the historic second Vatican Council in 1962. Born into a poor family in the North of Italy he took the name ‘John’ in honour of his father and of his parish church where he was baptized and confirmed

Pope Francis has called for a global day of prayer and fasting on Oct. 7 to mark the one-year anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel amid escalating violence in the region.
The Pope’s surprise announcement, made at the end of his homily at Mass in St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday, comes the morning after Iran launched hundreds of missiles towards Israel following the launch of the Israeli military’s ground offensive in Lebanon.
Pope Francis said on Oct. 2 that the Church is always at the service of humanity “especially in his dramatic hour of our history, as the winds of war and the fires of violence continue to ravage entire peoples and nations.”
“I ask everyone to take part in a day of prayer and fasting for peace in the world,” he said.
