TERRIBLE BOATING ACCIDENT

Auckland Star, Volume XXIV, Issue 248, 19 October 1893, Page 5

TERRIBLE BOATING ACCIDENT- SEVENTEEN LIVES LOST.

The Limerick “Chronicle ” of August 17th contains the following account of a terrible boating fatality at Tarbert: — “A most heartrending case of drowning, in which seventeen persons are supposed to have perished, occurred in the Shannon, between Moneypoint and Tarbert, last night. Yesterday morning a party of seventeen persons from the neighbourhood of Tarbert, young men and women, crossed the Shannon to Moyne, near Kilrush, where they left the boat, walking into Kilrush and proceeded by railway to Kilkee. Having spent the evening at this watering resort, they returned to their boat at Moyne, and proceeded on their journey across the Shannon, when it is surmised that, through some mismanagement, or the breaking of an oar, the boat capsized, and the whole party are supposed to have been drowned. It is stated that their cries were heard at Scattery and Saleen, near Ballylongford, and along the Kerry shore. This morning the craft was found, bottom upwards, at Kilcredane, near Carrigaholt. From inquiries made officially and otherwise, and also from the friends of the ill-fated excursionists, who had arrived at Carrigaholt before the boat was discovered, it transpired that this was the boat which left Tarbert, her name being the “Maurice Murphy, of Tarbert.” No other traces of them have up to the present been discovered beyond the fact that only a portion of them went to Kilkee from Kilrush. The others remained in and around Kilrush, while it is stated one of them returned by the Waterford Steamship Company’s steamer to Limerick, but up to this no trace of him has been obtained. They visited some houses in Kilrush, and are reported to have left Moyne quay at half past seven o’clock in the evening. All the ill-fated party were respectable people. They left Moyne at a quarter past eight. One of the young men attempted to put up a sail to help them across to Tarbert, but was prevented by the old man, as it was very rough at the time. They then put off, and when about one mile from shore, Coffey says he heard the screams of the women.  They spoke of it to the others, but they  took no further notice of it. They described the boat as being frail and most dangerous and as having water in her. One of the Kilrush men who witnessed their departure says that one of the party took a fiddle to play. It is stated that four out of one family have perished, including a teacher named Miss Scanlan, two out of other families, and so on. It is extremely difficult here to get exact information. The scene of this terrible disaster is the same as that of the tragic end of Gerald Griffin’s famous “Colleen Bawn.” The most painful excitement prevails, not only in Tarbert among the friends and relatives of the party, but also in Kilrush and the neighbourhood. The people are searching along the Kerry shores to-day, but not a trace of the drowned can be found. The following is a complete list of all in the boat:—John Murphy and his son, owners of the boat, fishermen, and supporters of a largo family; Miss Scanlan, schoolmistress, Renturk National School (a lady highly respected by everyone who knew her). Michael Scanlan, Mary Scanlan, Bridget and Katie Scanlan, all of one house; Pat Lyndon and his sister Mary ; Michael and Thomas Bovenizer, sons of Michael Bovenizer, a respectable farmer at Sallowglen ; John Holly, Willie Naughton, and Tom Glazier, all farmers’ sons ; Hannah Sullivan, Norah Fitzgerald, Johanna McGrath, Richard Allen,

KINDNESS during Life

I would rather have one little rose From the garden of a friend, Than to have the choicest flowers

When my stay on earth must end. I would rather hear the kindest words. That can now be said to me, Than flattered when my heart is still, And this life ceased to be. I would rather have a loving smile, From friends I know are true, Than tears shed round my casket, When I bid this world adieu.

Bring me any flower today, Be it pink or white or red. I’d rather have one blossom now Than a bouquet when I’m dead.
