THE HOME RULE QUESTION.
PROTESTANT OPINION. The Freeman’s Journal. Publishes the following:— Mr Alfred Webb, whose name is held in high and well-merited esteem by the great majority of the Irish people as that of a consistent, pure-minded, and conscientious Protestant Nationalist, has rendered a signal service to the Irish, cause. Mr Webb recently invited, from a wide circle of his coreligionists, a statement of opinion regarding the probable effect of Home Rule upon their position. His inquiry was couched in the following comprehensive terms :—” Have you during your experience of life in Ireland observed any instance of intolerance amongst your Catholic friends and neighbours, such as would lead you to fear for. your liberty and safety, and for the free exercise of your religion, under an Irish Constitution such as that sketched out in Mr Gladstone’s Bill ?” Mr Webb has collected the replies in the form of a pamphlet, which is now passing through the press, and will be published in a few days. Mr Adam Fitzell, of Trieneragh, Listowel, County, Kerry, after thirty years acquaintance with his Catholic neighbours, tells how he has been, persecuted:— I am the only Protectant in the parish, and I have been selected, by the ratepayers of the Kilshinane and Trieneragh divisions of the Listowel Union to represent them as .L G. for the past eighteen years, never sought this office; it was actually forced upon -me by my Catholic neighbours.. He goes on to narrate how his Protestant landlord would have ruined him only three months ago were it not for the assistance rendered by one of this oppressed Protestant’s Catholic neighbours. LEBANON: Presiding over the Sunday of the Rosary Mass, Al-Rahi added from his patriarchal summer residence in Diman, northern Lebanon: “Electing a president is crucial right now. This leader will need to unite the nation, enforce Resolution 1701 and a cease-fire, handle talks about Lebanon’s regional role, get Parliament and cabinet working again, rebuild Lebanon’s standing in Arab and world communities, and help over a million displaced Lebanese.”
Lebanon has been without a president since Oct. 31, 2022. As head of state, this position is always held by a Maronite Christian.

WASTE: At the moment, the greatest impact of food waste is on the climate crisis. Unep estimates that 8% to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions are associated with food that is not consumed. As it says: “If food loss and waste were a country, it would be the third biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions.” In poorer countries it increases food insecurity and everywhere it adds to biodiversity loss, because a lot of land is turned over to cultivation without it ultimately feeding anyone. Every informed observer agrees that food waste and loss must be reduced. But can we do it? https://www.theguardian.com/
