COME ON ATHEA
This Saturday is a big day for Athea GAA and the Junior A Football team who take on favourites Cappagh in the Premier -Junior A Final in Askeaton at 2.30, a game that hasn’t been won by them I’m told for 17 years . Well done to Diarmuid Collins of Stelcon who has the maroon and white flags flying high from the pitch to the village so get them up all over. Collins’ have them for sale and no doubt all support on the day would be great and hopefully they will bring the honours back to Athea .
Well done to Athea Tidy Towns who received a Highly Commended Award last week when they travelled to The Strand Hotel in Limerick and were awarded the prize of 1,500 euro. And isn’t it also great to see The Gables getting a facelift and newly painted what a difference it makes to our lovely little village -well done.
Domhnall was saying last week in his column that he thought that his column doesn’t actually get read by people. Well let me tell you its actually a brilliant read in my books and every week he tells it as it is and it does take time and effort to put news together ,so keep up the great work Domhnall.
Well the Athea Drama Group yet again along with the Comhaltas Group put on such a brilliant show last week with sold out houses over the 3 nights. It was the best laugh and we all need a bit of laughter in one’s life, there’s enough doom and gloom around . The Playground will truly benefit from the funds raised over the 3 nights. Well done to all who gave of their time to take part, those who worked behind the scenes and everyone who had any input into this great fundraiser.
Can you believe there is a real shortage of blood here in Ireland at the moment ,with supplies having to be imported. from other countries. I’ve always meant to give blood but of course put it on the long finger and never got to donate for which I’m regretful now at my age for not doing so. So I suppose its something all our younger people should think of doing as you never know when some family member may need blood.
Sympathy is extended to Catherine Moran and her family on the recent passing of John who was known to many as Master Moran having taught here in Athea NS ,for many years. His remains reposed at Athea Parish Church on Monday evening and burial took place following Requiem Mass on Tuesday. May the Light of Heaven be John’s.
The death also took place over the weekend of Tom Paul Stack of Templeglantine and formerly of The Hill Upper Athea at Killeline Care Centre. He reposed at Hartnett’s Funeral Parlour on Monday evening and burial took place after Requiem Mass here in Holy Cross Athea. May he rest in peace.
The usual Xmas Shoebox Appeal is on the horizon. I’m not sure of the closing date but its a lovely way of giving gifts at this time of the year to the kids who get nothing . The boxes can be given in to the local schools as usual .
Don’t forget there’s a bookcase in the kitchen at the Hall where you can take books to read or drop in books for others to take and read ,its adult readers books and at no charge its great.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
Be Happy not because everything is Good
But because you can see the GOOD in everything.
