Athea Lost its Most Senior Citizen.
Over the weekend Athea mourned the passing of our most senior citizen. Hannah Scanlon of Dirreen went to her Eternal Reward at the great age of 102, she was in her 103rd year and what an achievement that was, both for herself and her close-knit family. Hannah rallied through the Ups and Downs of Life having been predeceased by some of her own children. A woman of immense devotion, hardworking and with a great mind for history, she will be sadly missed by all who she came in contact with. Many paid their final respects at the family home over the weekend. She was laid to rest on Saturday in Holy Cross Cemetery. Sympathy is extended to her daughters, sons, relatives and many friends. R.I.P.
The death also occurred over the weekend of Joan O Riordan of Dirreen, Athea. .Joan was a lovely quiet and gentle lady, a real family person who was much loved by her family and her adored grandchildren. Her remains reposed at Lyons’ Funeral Parlour on Sunday evening where many came to pay their respects to her husband Willie, daughters, sons and many relations and friends. Requiem mass on Monday was followed by burial in Holy Cross here in Athea. Condolences to her beloved husband and family. May the light of Heaven be hers.
Congrats are extended to Caroline Murphy daughter of Betty and Charlie, who on Saturday last was married here in Athea Church to Neilus O’Sullivan, son of Anne-Marie and Connie, Lower Athea. Fr. Chris O Donnell performed the Nuptial Ceremony and afterwards it was off to Ballygarry Hotel where a great day was enjoyed by everyone. Wishing them every happiness in their married life.
You are welcome to come along to Athea Library on this Wednesday evening at 7.30, where Pat Higgins will lead the group and look into the upcoming Sunday readings each week. Reflections will be shared with practical applications for our daily lives. Mark October 2nd in your mind.
Didn’t Eoin McCarthy make a name for himself last week at Listowel Races having trained a 250-1 winner. Congrats to Eoin and long may his success continue. Great to see an Athea man being interviewed on TG4, Here’s to the future.
