MAIREAD HURLEY: The death has occurred of Mairead Hurley (Nee Geoghegan) 12 Hawthorn Drive, Newcastle West and formerly Rooskagh East, Athea on Sunday September 29. Predeceased by her father Willie, brother Sean, and nephew Liam. Reposing at Riedy’s Funeral Home Newcastle West on Wednesday October 2, from 5pm to 8pm. The Requiem Mass was celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception Newcastle West on Thursday at11.30am.Burial took place afterwards in Ardagh Cemetery. Sympathy to husband Pat, daughter Willow, mother Mary, brother Tom, sisters Catriona, Breda, Noreen, Ursula, Siobhan, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends. May she rest in Peace.
AWARDED GRANTS: Limerick has been awarded grants of over 12 million for sports facilities under the Community Sports Facilities Fund announced recently. St Kieran’s GAA Club is set to receive the sum of €161,953, for Dressing Rooms, Showers and Toilets. Old Mill Sports Club is set to receive €39,634 for their upgrades.
ANNIVERSARY: Limerick ICA was set up in 1944 and marked their 80th, anniversary at the Woodlands Hotel Adare on Tuesday September 24. Ardagh ICA members were in attendance to join in the celebrations, including Joan O’Riordan a past Federation President.
CLERICAL CHANGES: Brendan Leahy Bishop of Limerick has made a number of Diocesan clerical changes of local interest that took effect from Saturday September 28. Fr Tom Mangan a native of Glensharrold, Carrigkerry has become Co-Parish Priest of the Ide Naofa Pastoral Unit, made up of the parishes of Abbeyfeale, Athea, Templeglantine and Tournafulla/Mountcollins. His main responsibility will be in the Abbeyfeale and Athea parishes. He was Parish Priest of Donaghmore-Knockea Parish and has also served in St Josephs and Raheen parishes in Limerick. He will be replacing Glenville, Ardagh native Canon Tony Mullins in Abbeyfeale and Athea parishes who was so popular there over his 8 years. Fr Tony has been elevated to the Diocesan Pastoral team overseeing the 60 parishes with Bishop Leahy. In addition, he will be also looking after the Cratloe/Sixmilebridge parish in County Clare which is within the Limerick Diocese. Fr Michael Noonan Ardagh/Carrigkerry Parish Priest has retired to Cappagh in the Pastoral Unit of Adare, Askeaton, Cappagh and Croagh/Kilfinny. Fr Raphael Okanumeh who is Assistant Priest in Our Lady’s Pastoral Unit is to live in the Parochial House in Ardagh. Ardagh/Carrigkerry is part of the Our Lady’s Pastoral Unit. Continued good health and happiness to all in their future ministries.
GAELIC GAMES: St Kieran’s defeated Knockane by 1-7 to 0-4 in the County Junior B Football Championship Quarter-Final played at Rathbane on Sunday September 29. They led by 0-5 to 02 at half-time and increased their lead on resumption to book a semi-final place. St Kieran’s defeated Kilmallock in the Intermediate hurling relegation match by 1-11 to 0-9 at Ballyagran on Saturday October 5. They trailed by 0-6 to 0-5 at half time, but upper their performance on resumption to retain their status for next season. SOCCER NEWS: Creeves Celtic lost 2-1 (Eoin Mc Enery)away to St Ita’s in the Desmond Premier Division League Cup Group A, on Sunday September 29. Carrig Celtic and Kilcolman Rovers had no games. In the Ladies Premier Division League Cup Group B Kilcolman Rovers defeated Broadford United 6-2 at home with goals from Sinead Kelly 3, Mia Forrestal 2, and Sophie Hennessy. Creeves Celtic received a walkover from Glantine in the Division 1 League Cup Group A.
LOTTERY DRAW: The Ardagh Development Association and Saint Kieran’s GAA joint weekly lottery draw took place on Monday September 30.The numbers drawn were 3,6,11,15, and there was no winner of the €7,100 Jackpot. Congratulations to the five lucky dip winners who received € 40 each: Maurice Harnett Ardagh, The Mack’s and Mann’s Skehanagh, Mike Molyneaux, Ardagh, John Dillane Old Mill, Therese Kelly Ardagh. Next week’s Jackpot will be €7,200. People can play online using club force on the club’s Facebook page, with 6pm on Monday evening the deadline. The tickets are also on sale at the usual outlets, and all support will be appreciated. Both organisations wish to thank all the people for their continued support.
RADIO DRAW: Congratulations to Lisa Massey Newcastle West, who won €640 in the West Limerick 102fm 50/50 draw, be held on Friday October 4. GROTTO ROSARY: October is the month of the Holy Rosary and during the month the rosary will be recited at Churchtown Grotto at 6pm and at Foynes Church Grotto at 7pm. All are welcome to attend and participate.
FILM REUNION: Leo Finucane film maker from Moyvane is holding a reunion in Kerry’s Writers Museum on Friday October 11. He bought his first movie camera in 1978 and over the next 30 years he made 18 feature films. A special screening of ”Red Haired Mary” will be shown on the night. Tickets cost €10 and can be bought online at https:kerrywritersmuseum.com or at the door. Doors open at 7.30pm and tea and coffee will be served.
SINGING CLUB: The Garry Mc Mahon Singing Weekend hosted by the West Limerick Singing Club will take place in Abbeyfeale from Friday October 11, to Sunday 13.
TRACTOR RUN: St Kieran’s GAA Club are holding a Tractor/Vintage Car Run on Sunday October 13. Registration at 11.30am, entry fee € 20, shop on site for refreshments. A Mini convoy for children at 12.30 will lead the parade. The event will commence at the new GAA field in Ardagh at 1pm and follow a route around the locality. Tractors, motorcyclists, vintage and modified cars are welcome.
RAMBLING HOUSES: A rambling house will be held at Ballyhahill Hall on Wednesday October 16, at 8.00pm Ita’s rambling house takes place in the Desmond Complex Newcastle West on Friday October 18, at 8pm. All musicians, singers, storytellers, dancers and listeners are welcome to attend.
TABLE QUIZ: Creeves Celtic FC are holding a table quiz at the Thatch Bar Newbridge, Askeaton, V94H306 on Friday October 18, at 8pm. Tables of four, €10 per person and prizes for the top two teams. A Raffle will be held with lots of prizes to be won. All support on the night will be greatly appreciated.
FAMINE WALK: Knockfierna Heritage Society Famine Memorial Walk will take place on Sunday October 20, at 2pm.
