Dan attended Kilcolman national school and after leaving he worked for a while with local farmers and for the Cripps family at Rathgonan, Ardagh. He spent a year working in London before taking up employment with CIE in Foynes, where he spent 38 happy years. He retained a great love for trains and as a result got to travel all over the world. Married to Joan Murphy from nearby Glensharrold they set up home in Boughillbo and raised their family. Dan was hard working around the home, kept a garden and liked the simple way of life.
Dan was a member of Newcastle West Golf Club, which is now based in Rathgonan, and he enjoyed success on the fairways and was a coach and committee member. He was interested in history and author of a number of books about the locality. He enjoyed working with wood and creating pieces which can be seen in many houses and gardens. The Lectern stand in Kilcolman church is an example of his work. He liked the outdoors and could be seen walking with his dog around his own area up to a few short months ago.
