Bu Peg Prendeville

What a gorgeous week we had last week. No doubt, but the sun puts a pep in our step always. And this week, so far, is kind enough for the time of year.

Sean Maughan is offering an Alpha course on October 6 and is looking for people who may have drifted from going to Church but are still interested in the deeper questions in life. Alpha is a 10-week course exploring the basics of the Christian faith. It’s the perfect place to discuss life’s big questions in a friendly, open, and informal setting. He asked me if I know anybody who would like to be involved in helping him facilitate small groups. If anybody is interested ring him on 0852321375. It will be run in Foynes Pastoral centre, next to the Church, for 10 weeks. He has trained in this and wishes to put it into practice.

The usual big crowd attended the Ballyhahill Rambling House last Wednesday night. No matter the time of year it always attracts a big crowd. The proceeds from these nights go to maintain the upkeep of the Parish Hall, which is such a great asset to our parish.

It is hard to believe we are into Listowel Races week which is always an exciting week for many, both young and old. And old is how I felt when my granddaughter told me she was wondering what she would wear to the Races for Ladies Day on Friday. It only seems like the other day I was taking my children to the amusements! Tempus fugit – time flies.

I offer another poem this week which I wrote some years ago having attended the Wrenboys in Listowel on Races week.

Wrenboy night in Listowel

Music filled the Square,

echoing off the Church walls,

reminding it of past times,

when carols lifted

towards the heavens.

Now, under a benign moon,

the beat of the bodhráns

and the cajoling of a polka tune

saw tired feet being reborn.

Traditional songs and stories

brought life to world weary faces,

washing away all wrinkles.

Like the Pied Piper,

the sound of the music

drew young and old

to drink from its fountain.

For a few hours

the earth stopped

to join with the angels

to rejoice and be glad.
