LIVELIHOOD of Farmers; A document outlining Hungary’s priorities for its presidency says that European agriculture “may have never faced as many challenges as it does today”.

“Extraordinary weather conditions caused by climate change, growing input costs, increasing imports from third countries, and overly-stringent production rules have significantly decreased the competitiveness of the sector,” it says.

“The accumulation of these challenges led to a situation where the livelihood of European farmers is threatened,” the policy document adds.

MEDICAL Belt: Why this record matters Date: 1893

Catalogue reference: J 17/283

In the 19th century, the allure of electricity permeated consumer culture and even understandings of the body. Electric devices were sold in the Victorian period as an alternative to medicines prescribed by doctors. Adverts for devices, such as medical belts, appeared in popular lay magazines and the local press.

Proprietor Cornelius Bennett Harness of the Medical Battery Company stated his medical belt would cure nervous complaints, indigestion, sleeplessness and impart ‘new life and vigour’. Domestic electrical devices also had the added benefit of patients being able to self-administer and control their own treatment.

RELIC: First, what is a relic?

The Catholic Church classifies relics into three different categories:

A first-class relic is part of a saint’s body, which could be a piece of a bone, hair, or a vial of blood.

A second-class relic is something the saint personally owned. This could be a book, piece of clothing, rosary, glasses, or journal.

A third-class relic (this is where we come in) is an item touched to a first or second-class relic, or even their tomb.

Catholic Education

To address this challenge at its root, I believe it is vital that we remind ourselves of the extent to which the Catholic faith is a force for good in the world. Jesus said: “You will know them by their fruits,” and even some outside the Church appreciate her fruitfulness. In 2007, for example, an atheist businessman, Robert Wilson, gave $22.5 million (£13.5 million) to Catholic education in New York, arguing that, “without the Roman Catholic Church, there would be no western civilisation.”

Inspired by Wilson’s insight, I have been working recently with Fr Marcus Holden, parish priest of Ramsgate and a tutor at Maryvale, to collate the extraordinary contributions of Catholic culture and Catholic minds. The following sections provide some samples of this work, which should be invaluable to anyone who is faced with the question: “What has the Church ever done for us?”
