LOVELY ATHEA
I was informed the other day that a reporter who had passed through Athea on route to the Glin Castle Open Day recently was pleasantly surprised by our lovely little Village which she incidentally called —PICTURESQUE ATHEA. Now wasn’t that a lovely thing to hear and long may it remain so and again isn’t it wonderful to see Paul Collins doing a lovely extension on the shop which incidentally Athea would be lost without along with our other great conveniences which other small villages are without. Let’s all keep it tidy and looking lovely.
Sympathy is extended to Ken Dermody on the passing of his wife Brid in Naas recently. Ken was stationed here in Athea in the 60s and won a County Medal with Athea in football for which he will well be remembered .May the light of Heaven be his wife’s at this difficult time for the family.
Well done to all who were involved in doing the Altar with lovely wild flowers etc for the month of September which is the Month of Creation where we are reminded to be thankful for all the beautiful nature that surrounds us. I just notice incidentally the swallows all gathering together for their long return journey back to warmer climates .
Can you believe it —-selection boxes are available in supermarkets already I’m told and the tubs of celebrations etc. It’s mad and we are long away from Xmas yet with not even Halloween being celebrated. The kids haven’t hardly got over last Xmas yet and it puts extra pressure on parents especially who have just had enough to spend on getting kids back to school and college.
This Saturday night sees Fr. Tony Mullins final farewell Mass here in Athea at 7.30 to which everyone is invited. It will be a very special occasion in thanks also for Fr. Tony’s great work and presence in our community. Envelopes are available still at church doors for anyone who wishes to make a contribution to Fr. Tony and can be given in to the basket on Saturday Night or to our Sacristans prior to Saturday night. Everyone is welcome to the Hall afterwards for a cuppa and a bit of a get together and maybe a song or two. We wish Fr. Tony all the very best as he takes up his new position.
Listowel Races are on the horizon which marks the end of the Summer for many especially the farmers who in years gone by marked the end of the hard work of the Summer with a few days at the races. Now it’s a lot about Friday being Ladies Day and a day that the students attend and Saturday is a nice day with all the vintage style. Hoping for good weather now for the week.
