CHILD ABUSE: Liveline on RTE Radio 1 has aired the subject of child abuse by teachers in recent programmes. It made chilling listening to hear all the stories from adults remembering the days of corporal punishment in schools up to 1982. We all have our own memories from our school going days of being on the receiving end of punishment which did not merit the incident. The brutal punishment by the many different means was  assault and hair rising to hear on the show. The teachers’ actions knocked all confidence from their victims which had an adverse effect later on their adult lives. The majority  of these teachers have now passed on ( some remain and hopefully they were listening in),but their ill deeds remain to stir up unhappy times from school days.  These sadist teachers had too much power, and parents had little will if they believed their children to challenge the authorities who backed them.  We must also acknowledge the many lovely teachers who built confidence and were fair and sympathetic and made school life bearable despite the bullies’ actions. Thanks to the Liveline team for offering the people a chance to tell their story which may help to heal this sad chapter of their lives.
