JOSEPHINE LARKIN: The death has taken place of Josephine (Josie) Larkin ( née Sheehan) Clounagh, Reens, Ardagh, and formerly of Inchebawn, Templeglantine, Co Limerick, peacefully at Adare and District Memory Care, Croagh, Co Limerick on Saturday August 10.  Predeceased by husband Tim, son-in-law John Gillen, brothers Michael and Dan and sister Nelly. Reposing  took place at St Kyran’s Church, Coolcappa on Sunday  August 11 from 4 to 6 pm. The Requiem Mass was celebrated in St Kieran’s Church Coolcappa on Monday August 12 at 2 pm. Burial took place afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. Sympathy to sons Tom, Mike, Tim and Dan, daughters Mary, Margaret, Jo, Breeda and Eileen, sons in law Pat, Liam and Pat, daughters-in-law in law Anne, Maureen, Janet and Jenny, nieces Margaret and Adi, grandchildren-, great-grandchildren, neighbours and friends. Josie was 94 years old and blessed with good health until recently. She worked hard in the home and farm and was friendly and jovial and welcoming to all. May her gentle soul rest In Peace.

ANNIVERSARY: Congratulations and best wishes in the future  to Pa and Nora O’Connor Glenastar, Ardagh who recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

FLEADH CHEOIL: The All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil was held in Wexford this year and well done to all the competitors who participated. Congratulations to all who were prize winners and especially the Ardagh/Carrigkerry branch members. Áine Nolan, first in senior piano, members of the Senior 8-hand  mixed Céilí dancers and members of the Senior 8-hand ladies Céilí dancers.

BALLYINE MASS: Mass was celebrated by Fr Michael Noonan at Ballyine Mass Rock on Thursday August 15, to mark the Feast of the Assumption. The weather was ideal and over 60 people were in attendance. The small choir enhanced the ceremony with appropriate hymns  to our Blessed Lady. The Leahy family  allowed access to the venue, prepared the shrine, altar and  supplied refreshments for all after the mass. Bernard, Conor, Dympna participated in the ceremony. Ballyine Shrine was officially opened on August 15, 1954, to mark Marian Year in Ireland and  celebrated its 70th Anniversary this year.

GAELIC GAMES: St Kieran’s lost to Na Piarsaigh by 2-11 to 1-11 in round 3 of the County Senior Football Championship played at Clarina on Thursday August 15. They trailed by 0-7 to 0-4 at half-time. TEAM: Ray Noonan, Mike Shanahan, Diarmuid Mulcahy, Aaron Heffernan, Anthony Mullins, Brendan Mc Carthy, Mossie Shine, Liam Kennedy 0-2, Darragh Treacy, Noel Callanan0-1, Cormac Mann, Michael Long, Alan Daly 1-5, Dylan Moloney 0-1, Eoin Mc Enery 0-1. Subs Lorcan Murphy, Sean Long 0-1, Kevin Meade, Darragh Mc Mahon.  St Kieran’s meet Adare in round 4 on Thursday August 22, at 6.30pm in Askeaton.

LADIES FOOTBALL: Old Mill lost to Galtee Gaels by 1-12 to 0-14 in round 1 of group 1 of the County Senior Ladies Football Championship played at Kilbehenny on Saturday August 10. They play Ballylanders in round 2.

ROUNDERS: St Kieran’s defeated St Treas  of Derry in the junior rounder’s championship played  in Longford on Saturday August 10. They play Castletown/Liam Mellows from Wexford in the quarter final.

LOTTERY DRAW: The Ardagh Development Association and Saint Kieran’s GAA joint weekly lottery   draw took place on Monday August 12.The numbers drawn were 1,8,15,26, and  there was no  winner of the € 6,400 Jackpot. Congratulations to the five lucky dip winners who received  € 40 each: Kennelly/s /Neary’s, James O’Connor Rathreigh, Ardagh, Caroline Daly, Ardagh, Róisín Ambrose Ardagh, Tony Mullins Ardagh. Next week’s  Jackpot will be € 6,500. People can play online using club force on the club’s Facebook page, with 6pm on Monday evening the deadline. The tickets are also on sale at the usual outlets, and all support will be appreciated.  Both organisations wish to thank all the people for their continued support.

RADIO DRAW: Congratulations to Margaret Cross Abbeyfeale who won € 225 in the West Limerick 102fm 50/50 draw, held on Friday August 16. The tickets cost € 2, or 3 for € 5 and they are available from volunteers, in local shops, (including Moloneys Carrigkerry,  and from the radio station.  All support will be appreciated. BEGINNERS CLASS: A beginners set dancing class commenced in Con Colbert Hall Athea on Tuesday August 20. The class will cater for individuals who may dance polka sets and wish to proceed to learn the reel set dances. The class will run on a week to week basic starting at 8.30pm. RAMBLING HOUSE: A rambling house will be held at Ballyhahill Hall on Wednesday August 21, at 8.00pm. All musicians, singers, storytellers, dancers and listeners  are welcome to attend.

SINGING CLUB: The Garry Mc Mahon Singing Weekend hosted by the West Limerick Singing Club will take place in Abbeyfeale from Friday October 11, to Sunday 13. The closing date for entries to the newly composed traditional ballad competition is Friday August 23. Ballads must be original  and not previously  performed or published in public. They can be in English or Irish and sung in the traditional style. The entry fee is € 20, and application forms are available on the West Limerick Singing Club Facebook page, or direct from  West Limerick Singing Club c/o Mary O’Connor (Secretary), Peacehaven, Radharc Na Coille, Moyderwell, Tralee, Co. Kerry V92 HN2K. The first prize is € 1,000, second prize is € 300, and third prize is € 100, and the competition will be held on Saturday October 14, in the Ramble Inn Abbeyfeale at 2.30pm.

CHARITY CÉILÍ: The 3rd annual charity Céilí will be held in the Community Centre (V92WV70) Knocknagoshel Co Kerry on Sunday August 25,from 3-6pm. Music by Taylor’s Cross Céilí band. A raffle will be held for spot prizes and refreshments will be served. The proceeds are in aid of Parkinson’s Ireland and the event is being organised by John Nolan a regular on the dancing scene. The admission is € 12, and all support  will be greatly appreciated.

CLOTHES COLLECTION: Kilcolman NS are holding a fundraising clothes collection on Tuesday August 27. Bags of clothes, shoes, bags, belts, bed linen(no duvets or pillows) can be dropped to the school shelter any time before this date. A total of € 420 was received from the last clothes collection. Thank you for your continued support.

GREENWAY OUTING: The Great Southern Trail Group are organising a trip to New Ross, Wexford Greenway on Saturday August 31. Departing from the Market Yard Newcastle West at 8pm. RELAY FOR LIFE: Alice Barrett Glenastar, Ardagh is participating in the Relay for Life for the Irish Cancer Society on Saturday September 7,at 1pm  at Croagh GAA Club in memory of her father Jack Barrett. PLOUGHING  CHAMPIONSHIP: The 93rd National Ploughing Championship will be held for the third year in a row in Ratheniska County Laois  from Tuesday September 17 to Thursday September 19. The popular three-day event attracts large crowds each day to the well positioned location in the midlands.
