  OUT AND ABOUT

Well can you believe it, this is the last weekend of July as I e mail my few bits for the newsletter. August is upon us and you know what that means, the going back to school for the kids. And its such a pity the weather hasn’t really been what one would call Summer to .However we shouldn’t complain as I’ve heard many who went on a sun holiday found the temperatures too hot and were constantly looking for the shade. I suppose we can’t be pleased but you know what we haven’t it too bad at all.

Anyway, to get away from the weather, hopefully  all the Grandparents in the locality and beyond had a very Happy Grandparents Day on Sunday . We all, I know, have very special memories  of our own grandparents very different from the Grandparents of today’s world. Grandparents nowadays are busy helping out with taking care of their Grandkids as the parents have to go out to work and are busy driving them to their various activities ,and collecting them from school etc . We’ on the other hand’ remember our Grandparents for their lovely baking , the old stories they told us about the Banshee, and the Piseogs which enthralled us I can tell you and even though they had little they left us wonderful fun-filled memories.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Tommy, Cathy and Eiblish on the passing of their mother Peg Woulfe of Gortnagross during the past week .Many came to pay their last respects at the family home on Thursday evening last . Requiem Mass was concelebrated on Friday with burial to Holy Cross afterwards .Sympathy also to relatives and many friends also. May the light of Heaven be hers.

A huge crowd attended the graveyard Mass on Tuesday evening last at Holy Cross concelebrated by Canon Tony Mullins and Fr. Willie Russell to remember all those who were laid to rest there .On August 15th., Templeathea cemetery will have the special graveyard Mass at the Blessed Well , this being the Assumption Feast Day,  all welcome.

The Olympics are in full blast at the moment  with some great athletes showing their talents. The Irish no doubt will perform well hopefully and bring some medals back to our  little Island, we live in hope. A great game of badminton ensued the other night and the speed of the shuttle cock and agility of the young Dublin player was unreal. Hope he makes it to the medals.

INCOME: Average dairy farmer income falls 69% to €49,500 in 2023 – report

Teagasc said that the decrease is strongly associated with the sharp decline in dairy and tillage farm incomes in 2023 driven by falls in milk and cereal prices, lower production volumes and high input costs. Collectively, these two sectors accounted for 53% of farm income in Ireland in 2023.

LEAHY: Cornelius ‘Con’ Leahy (1876-1921) was born in Creggane, near Bruree, Co Limerick, and was one of seven brothers who were distinguished on the sports fields. His brother Patrick won the British high jump record in 1898 and won Olympic medals in 1900; Timothy jumped competitively; Tom was a talented jumper; and Mick, the youngest brother, was a champion hurdler, pole-vaulter and high jumper who also played rugby for Garryowen and hurling for Limerick, and rowed for Shannon.

In 1906, Con Leahy was entered for the Athens Games, along with Peter O’Connor and John Daly. They were nominated by the Irish Amateur Athletic Association and the Gaelic Athletic Association to represent Ireland.

However, when they arrived in Athens, they found the rules had been changed and that only athletes nominated by National Olympic Committees were eligible. Ireland did not have a National Olympic Committee, and the British Olympic Council claimed the three.

AHERNE: Dan & Tim Aherne; In the past Athea has produced athletes of renown. In particular two brothers were of world class standard in the early years of the century. Dan Aherne set a record for the Hop, Step and Jump (now called the Triple Jump) that remained unbeaten for a number of years. His brother Tim was a sprinter and hurdler but it was in the Hop, Step and Jump that he achieved his greatest sporting moment by winning an Olympic Gold Medal in London in 1908.

SOLAR CARS: Collecting enough sunlight

While a lot of sunlight falls on Earth during the day, the light becomes scattered as it travels through the atmosphere, so the amount that hits any given surface is fairly low. Averaged out over a full year to remove the effects of different seasons, it’s about 342 watts per square meter, an area equivalent to about 10 square feet. That’s approximately enough power to run a standard refrigerator.

Car sizes vary a lot, but a full-size car in the U.S. is about 18 feet long and 6 feet wide, so it has about 100 to 110 square feet (9 to 10 square meters) of horizontal surface. That would collect roughly 3,420 watts – enough to run a refrigerator, a dishwasher and a microwave oven.

SISTER Olha Ladzhun, a 105-year-old Basilian sister , July 23, 2024

It is not rare among religious women to live more than a century. They usually impress younger members of their communities by their mostly turbulent and dynamic lives and by their passionate desire to live their lives well. If this statement is true about any place in the world, the intensity of challenges grow in exponential proportion if a person was lucky (or doomed) to be born in what Timothy Snyder  calls “bloodlands,” a region comprising modern-day Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and the Baltic states.

GALWAY Races; The opening day at Ballybrit was on Tuesday, 17th August, 1869, when contemporary records show that 40,000 people turned up to watch the racing. The park at Eyre Square had to be used as a camping site for the huge crowds that arrived in the town well in advance of the two-day race meeting. The Chairman of the Stewards at the Meeting was Lord St. Lawrence, then M.P. for Galway and the man given most of the credit for creating Punchestown. His fellow stewards were all involved in the tradition of hunting and steeplechasing – men like the Marquis of Clanricard, Lord Clarmorris, Captain Blake Forster, Henry S. Persse, Pierce Joyce, George Morris and Valentine Black. Captain Wilson Lynch of Renmore gave the land at Ballybrit free of charge,

LAWN: When I cleared my parents’ house, one of the best things I brought home with me was my father’s John Deere lawn tractor. Not only does it cut the grass, it also has an attachable rake that scarifies the lawn. According to TV and radio gardener Terry Walton, who is on a mission to encourage people to reduce pesticide use in their gardens, scarifying and aerating your grass are two of the best things you can do to keep it healthy.
