FAREWELL and Blessings from Fr Brendan
‘Tis time to move on but at the same time it’s time to thank you all very sincerely for your hospitality, cooperation and generosity over the past three years. Return to Moyvane-Knockanure was a great surprise to me coming back to the fields and pathways of my childhood. Much has changed over the years even if in general the villages remain physically recognizable. It was from this pocket of the world that I learned the basics of my faith which remains alive here, even if now expressed quite differently. Indeed, through my time here, I have grown in faith, inspired by the example of great men and women that you are in your different ways. Thank you for it all. Where I have hurt, sorry. I leave with fine memories of you all to remain in the storehouse of my consciousness and may the Lord continue to bless you and Fr. Brendan Walsh in the years ahead. Slan. BUDGET: Irish Press 1931-1995, Thursday, 10 May, 1934; Page: 6
The Budget introduced yesterday by Mr. MacEntee was a reply to the pessimists which it will take those gentlemen a long time to get over. The Opposition Press had for weeks been announcing the bankruptcy of the country. Their mathematicians had discovered a deficit of no less than seven million pounds and predicted an orgy of extra taxation to bridge the gap.
Break
Mr. MacEntee gave a series of figures indicating how reckless was this effort to convince the people that Fianna Fail had bankrupted the State.
Break
When the present administration took office the direct liabilities handed on by Cumann na nGaedheal to its successors was £38,799,000 against £22,487,000 of which there were no off-setting assets. After two years of Fianna Fail what is the position? The direct liabilities of the State are only £44,523,000 and the off-setting assets are £27,495,000, leaving the net direct Public Debt £17,027,000 — a reduction in two years of nearly five and a half million pounds!
this administration has devoted more than fifteen million pounds to relief works, agriculture, housing, the poor and aged, land division, etc., and to achieve all this, said Mr. MacEntee, ” we have had to raise one loan of six million pounds ” of which there was still in the Exchequer on March 31st over £5,350,000. “It sounds almost unbelievable,” said the Finance Minister, ” but it is true.
Mr. MacEntee had a surplus of £1,202,000 to dispose of. The disposition does Fianna Fail credit. As has been the feature in all their Budgets, the poor come first. Since the days of Sinn Fein it has been the ideal of Republicans to provide widows and orphans with pensions. That ideal now becomes a fact. That is the first provision in the 1934-35 Budget. Next comes the unemployed, to whom—while a wider plan of national works is being prepared by a special committee—there goes half a million for relief works. Then for the Gaeltacht there are new grants for better housing, £60,000 of the £80,000 provided being free grants. For those who had their careers, and often their health, broken by service in defence of the Republic, there is recognition by the State of its duty to save I.R.A. veterans from destitution. This leaves £562,000 of the surplus for distribution. It goes first virtually to abolish the duty on tea.

FORGIVEN
Michael R. Heinlein
Perhaps one of the first miracles attributed to St. Maria Goretti is what speaks most of her character. Nearly six years after her violent murder by Alessandro Serenelli, she appeared to him in his jail cell. She had forgiven him as she lay dying in 1902, after he stabbed her to death for refusing his sexual advances. But here, serving a 30-year imprisonment for his crime, Serenelli found great peace and consolation in the mercy shown by his young victim as he heard her forgive him yet again. Even after her death, St. Maria Goretti provides a heroic example of what it means to forgive.

IRISH in Victoria
Snapshot 1: a rapid reminder of 190 years of the Irish in Victoria. From 1835 on, John Batman and John Pascoe Fawkner led groups of Europeans from Tasmania to pasture their sheep, grow crops and build a town on the Kulin lands of Port Phillip Bay. Partly by negotiation but largely by force, these early European settlers carried out what historian Richard Broome has described as ‘one of the fastest land occupations in the history of empires’.
The Irish were among them. Batman’s wife, for instance, was Eliza Callaghan from Clare, whose life story, indeed, has a tragic ending. Next came British government and squatter-financed bounty immigrants. Then, following the Famine, gold-rush immigrants came in tens of thousands. Clare turned out to be the county with the highest percentage in Victoria. ————
Snapshot 5: Catholic Archbishop Daniel Mannix’s strong defence of Aboriginal rights. David Moloney has collected a list of quotes from the 1920s through to the 1950s.
