SWITHIN’S DAY

Well I’ve just realised as I begin to e –mail my few lines to Domhnall that today is St. Swithin’s Day. Now the story is that if it rains on St. Swithin’s Day we will get rain for 40 days. That was the story we were led to believe, anyhow I’m not sure where it originated from but to the best of my belief it has never come to pass, even though the weather we are having at the moment is far from what one would call Summer to. Well we hope it improves especially for all those on holidays and the schoolchildren too.

Well done to the u-16 girls who travelled to Kinnegad on Saturday and despite losing to Antrim they did themselves proud. After all it’s about taking part and doing your parish, your family and yourselves proud ,and that’s exactly what Grace, Maeve and Geraldine did representing Athea.

Its sad to hear Canon Tony Mullins will be leaving Abbeyfeale-Athea at the end of September as he goes to help Bishop Brendan in Limerick and beyond. He will be replaced by Fr. Tom Mangan who hails from Ardagh-Carrigkerry. We won’t dwell on his departure at this early stage but no doubt he has and will leave us some great memories of a wonderful priest a man of the people, so approachable and down to Earth . More about this at a later stage.

I was listening to Dr. Roisin a Cardiologist the other morning on TV. She was giving a low down on energy drinks that have taken the world by storm through advertising etc. Some countries have banned them for U-18s and its not a bad idea. Recently 2 young men suffered heart attacks from the amount of caffeine and sugar they contain. They also cause sleep problems and anxiety. Red Bull she said has 6-7 spoons of sugar in it and those cans aren’t that big .The monster and prime cans contain 15-16 spoons of sugar if that isn’t enough to drive someone’s body into everdrive. So hopefully our young people will be wise and note the dangers and benefit from the wisdom.

Let me tell you our friend—-Covid is doing the rounds again and supposedly is rampant. I’m just getting over a bad dose of it, this being my 3rd time having it. This time around it saps your energy ,and one feels so tired and of course the breathing is affected, so just be careful and keep an eye on the small babies and young kids and especially our elderly – keep safe.
