OUR LADY: The Catholic Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady Help of Christians, protector of families and homes, on May 24. This devotion to Our Lady emerged in the 16th century when the invocation “Help of Christians” was added by Pope Saint Pius V to the Litany of Loreto after the famous Battle of Lepanto in 1571. The liturgical feast was established by Pope Pius VII upon returning from France after spending five years as a prisoner of Napoleon Bonaparte. The pontiff attributed his return, which occurred on May 24, 1814, to the intercession of Mary, Help of Christians, setting this date on the calendar in her honour.

SANDES:

Charles Lancelot Sandes was one of the principal land holders in the parish of Aghavallen or Ballylongford in Co Kerry at the time of Griffith’s Valuation in the 19th century. He also owned Carrigafoyle Castle, was leasing his property to Stephen Sandes, and held some lands in the parish of Morgans, Co Limerick.

In 1863,1864 and 1865, over 2,000 acres of the estate of William Sandes was offered for sale in the Landed Estates Court. In the 1870s, Charles Sandes of Carrigafoyle Castle and Bayview, Clontarf, Co Dublin, owned 1,208 acres in Co Limerick and 227 acres in Co Kerry, while the estate of Thomas Sandes of Sallowglen, Tarbert, amounted to over 7,000 acres in the 1870s.

Other Sandes holdings in this part of Co Kerry in the 19th century included Killelton House, which Charles L Sandes leased to William Hickie, Pyrmont House in Kilnaughtin (Tarbert), also known as Fyrmont, which William Sandes let to Thomas Sandes. The Sandes family and their descendants lived there until the 1920s, when the estate was sold and the house was later demolished.

William G Sandes was leasing Greenville near Listowel from the Earl of Listowel at the time of Griffith’s Valuation and it was a home of this branch of the Sandes family until World War I. It was repaired and rebuilt in the 1920s.

Long ago it was the custom on May Eve to bless the cattle and crops.

One should not sit on the grass or pick flowers on May Day.

Milk should not be given away on May Day without shaking salt on it.

If any one came in on May Eve and a churn was being made, he or she take a turn at it for fear they would carry the butter.

STUDY: Started in 1938, the Harvard Study of Adult Development represents the longest longitudinal study on happiness ever conducted. It set out to follow a group of men through every stage of their lives, from youth to old age, and continues to study their descendants.

The Harvard Study aimed to discover what makes human beings flourish, and its overarching conclusion was this: it’s all about good relationships. The Harvard Study has found that the quality of a person’s relationships has the biggest influence on their health and happiness.

ADVICE: Dear Therapist,

I have two boys ages 7 and 8 and I find myself constantly telling them to put on a sweater. They get annoyed often telling me, “mom I’m fine, I’m hot!” To which I respond, “put one on anyways!’ I asked myself why I am like this so fearful of them getting sick and I remembered that when I was 17 I had kidney problems. For me, catching a cold could cause a flare up so I had to be cautious
