Challenge Match
Athea played our neighbours Shannon Gaels in Athea Saturday evening in a challenge. This was a great high scoring game of football played in ideal conditions in Athea between two evenly matched teams. Athea played some lovely football and you can really see the work they do in training paying off in the matches.

Division 1A League Athea V Cappagh Rathkeale:
Athea played at home against Cappagh Rathkeale on Thursday evening last in the second Round of the Division 1a league. Athea started very brightly and raced into a 1:03 to 0:01 lead thanks to 1:02 from Daniel Hunt and a point from Shane Ahern. As the first half progressed Cappagh Rathkeale started to come into the game and score an excellent long-range point and well taken goal to leave the sides level as we approached half time. Just before half time a long ball into Aaron Broderick left him one-on-one with the defender and he neatly side stepped and crashed the ball home from close range leaving the score at half time Athea up 2:04 to 1:04. Athea started the second half well but were finding it hard to score. Cappagh Rathkeale then had their best spell of the game, dominating possession around the middle of the field and creating numerous scoring chances and scored 1:02 during this period to leave them 2 points ahead with about 10min remaining. Athea to their credit didn’t panic and managed to start getting ball into our dangerous full forward line with Shane Ahern slotting home a fantastic goal to put Athea back in the lead which was quickly followed by points from Daniel and Aaron Hunt. Athea managed to withstand some late Cappagh Rathkeale goalmouth pressure to win on the night 3:07 to 2:07. Athea had excellent performances all over the field with special mention to Daniel Hunt, Shane Ahern and Aaron Broderick.
