LOW WASTE.

GIY founder Michael Kelly has said: “I think most of us are horrified at the amount of unnecessary packaging on products that we’re bringing into our home so this has been a long-held ambition of mine to be able to make low-waste options more widely available.  “While recycling is the answer for many people, we actually only recycle about 15% of annual household waste, so really prevention is the most important way of ensuring that single-use plastic doesn’t become a long-term pollutant. Kelly explained that GIY is trying to “offer as many common-use household products as possible” and also make the refill usage “as easy as possible”.

PAPERS:

RENT Struggle; Irish Examiner 1841-current, Tuesday, 26 October, 1886; Page: 3

A very large meeting of tenant-farmers from the counties of Limerick and Kerry was held today at Newtownsandes The object of the meeting was to give advice to the people at the present stage of the rent struggle, below is only a sample.

Corner boys.

Mr John Dillon M.P. speech at meeting in Tralee; —They were not only corner boys but the very lowest shade of corner-boys, and the funniest thing of all was, there was an English gentleman who got into conversation with the police, and one of the police said B gor it’s the queerest job I was ever at. (laughter). The  English gentleman began to enquire who the emergency man was, and the policeman said, “I don’t think at all about them; we don’t speak a word to them. Afterword’s I said to myself “they must be very happy” (laughter); seven in one house, and the five policemen, not speaking a word to the other two. My belief is if that thing goes on long the public will throw the  Emergency men into a bog-hole (laughter), and wherever the Emergency men go the police have to follow them, and the police look when walking after them as if their stomach were going to turn every minute [laughter]. All I can say is if Lord Ormathwaite begins that game instead of having tenantry and rack-rents, he will have costly emergency men and derelict farmers. If you will only be brave men the Lord Ormathwaite’s and Mr Supple’s, and many others as well, as their agent, George Sande’s, will have trouble and difficulty in collecting their rents. I am convinced that you will succeed and that very soon (cheers) you will succeed.

LISTOWEL INTELLIGENCE,

{From our Correspondent).

THE RENT QUESTION IN NORTH KERRY THE DISTRESS OF THE TENANTRY—THE SERVICE OF EJECTMENT PROCESSES. Listowel, Monday. Perhaps it would be difficult to find throughout the length and breadth of this impoverished country a more desolate waste than those land over which Mr. George Sandes acts as agent. They are situated in various parts of North Kerry, and may be at once recognized by the barren appearance which they present. There is a weird loneliness about them that attracts while it awes the person whose business or turn of mind leads him to visit them. They are brown finney patches that oppress the sight with their gloominess. They are sombre and yet picturesque, with a sad picturesqueness that chills while it interests; but does not either please or repress the observer.

Headline of meeting, where many speeches on the hardship of tenants presented. See paper for full report.

SUPPRESSED BRANCHES. BALLYLONGFORD (COUNTY KERRY).

The regular meeting of this branch was held on St. Patrick’s Day. There was a large attendance of members. Mr. John Diggins presided. Amongst those present were—Messrs. John Moran, Tom Enright, J. P. Enright, and John Brassil, hon. sec. The following resolutions were unanimously adopted:— ” That we return our warmest thanks to the Liberal electors of North St. Pancras for the return of the Liberal and Home Rule candidate, Mr. Bolton, and we also note with satisfaction that the Tory Majority in Stamford Division has been reduced three fourths, these events, together with the triumphant return of the Liberal candidate at Stroke-on-Trent, are sure indications that the flowing tide is rapidly rising in favour of Gladstone and justice to Ireland.” “That we congratulate the Liberal leaders—Mr. Gladstone, Mr. Morley, Sir Wm. Harcourt, and Sir Charles Russell, on their sweeping attack on the Government of forgery and Coercion” ” That we sympathise with our chairman, who was cruelly evicted from the home of his ancestors together with a large, helpless family by the emergency landlord of Ballyline, and it gives us great satisfaction to know that O’Brien has no more control over Ballyline property, and his power of doing mischief is no more.”

KNOCKANURE (COUNTY KERRY).

A very representative meeting of this branch was held on Sunday last—Mr. Robert Hunt, president, occupied the chair. Others present—Messrs. T. J. O’Connor, treasurer ; J. T. O’Sullivan, P. R. Stack, honorary secretaries; W. E. Stack, J. Leahy, Wm. Murphy, W. Moore, G. Stack, J. T. Leahy, J. O’Connor, P. Collins, T. Kelly, T. Ahem, J. Fitzgerald, J. Goulding, J. Finucane. The chairman said—So long as such virtuous exterminators as T. W. Sandes, of Sallowglin, and Mickey Fitzgerald, of Athea, were at liberty to invade the parish with their crowbar brigade and level the houses of their unfortunate victims—so long as the unholy head of the grabber of Cornelius O’Connor’s evicted farm appeared in their midst, so long there remained a necessity for that organisation which has brought many a stubborn tyrant to his knees, and which will in the not distant future bring about the abolition of that accursed system which has deprived many an Irishman of his home. When the time came when there would be no necessity for a National League, he was sure that it would be one of the pleasantest reminiscences of their lives that their branch could be numbered amongst the list of Kerry branches which had fought the tyrannies of Balfourism in its last ditch, and which struggled to the last for the freedom and regeneration of their country. A circular was read about the William Moore Stack Testimonial. The chairman, in putting it before the meeting, said it was unnecessary for him to recommend the subject of the circular to his fellow-parishioners. He was sure that Kerrymen in general were well acquainted with the life and motives of Mr. Moore Stack. In days gone by, when it was not fashionable to be a patriot, Mr. Moore Stack suffered imprisonment, and sacrificed the emoluments of a high position in the cause of his country. He would say that no Irishman’s heart ever pulsated with deeper or truer love for its motherland than did the heart of William Moore Stack. Now that he has been incapacitated from filling any office through ill-health, and known, as it must be, by his fellow-countrymen, that had he adopted the policy of venal Irishmen, and proved a traitor to the cause of his country, he could by this time have amassed that store which his stern and uncompromising patriotism has denied him. It was unanimously agreed that collectors be appointed for the various town lands in the parish to collect subscriptions in aid of the testimonial.

TARBERT (COUNTY KERRY).

Meeting on Sunday—Mr. Timothy O’Sullivan, president, in the chair. Amongst those present were:—Messrs. J. Wallace, vice-president; John Lavery, treasurer; Gerald B. Fitzgibbon, hon. sec.; Michael Stack, Timothy O’Brien, Denis Nash, &c. Resolved—” That we view with misgiving the proposed Land Purchase Bill about to be introduced by Mr. Balfour.”

KILGARVAN (county Kerry.)—Fortnightly meeting on Sunday —Mr. Daniel Healy, president, in the chair. The committee as usual were strong in numbers. Resolved—” That we emphatically condemn the action of the Tory Government, who have sought to blacken the character of the Irish nation and its leaders.” “That we thank that distinguished leader of the Liberal Party, Mr. W. E. Gladstone, and his followers who are exposing the calumny of this foul and despicable conspiracy before the English electors.” “That we thank the electors of St. Pancras who have shown to the Tory Government that fraud, forgery, and perjury won’t satisfy the English people.”

PALESTINE: Countries that Recognize Palestine 2024

The State of Palestine is a partially recognized sovereign state, similar to Kosovo and Taiwan, which is currently classified as a “non-member observer state” by the United Nations. As of April 2022, Palestine 138 of the United Nations’ 193 members (and one observer) have recognized Palestine. Geographically, Palestine is located in the Mediterranean Middle East and consists of two non-contiguous territories: the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. These territories are separated by Israel, another partially recognized country—but one that has gained enough recognition (162 of 193 members) to join the U.N.—though its statehood is disputed by some members.

How to grow an olive tree

Sunbathing: In the UK, olives fare best in milder regions, where they are most likely to fruit. They demand as much sun as possible, so a south-facing spot is vital.

Shelter: Plant in a site that is shielded from cold winds, and avoid frost pockets. In cooler regions, it’s usually best to plant your olive in a container and move it under cover before winter; if you want to plant it in the ground, wrap it in horticultural fleece in late autumn.

POPE: By Matthew Santucci

Rome Newsroom, 22 May, 2024 /

Pope Francis on Wednesday closed his catechetical series on vices and virtues with a review of humility, a virtue that forms the “the base of Christian life” and is a source of peace for the Church and the world.

“Humility is everything. It is what saves us from the evil one and from the danger of becoming his accomplices. It is the source of peace in the world and in the Church. God has given us an example of this in Jesus and Mary, for our salvation and happiness,” the pope said to the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday morning.
