NORTHERN Lights were visible over Ireland after the most powerful solar storm in more than 20 years on Friday night.

FREE WILL: Existentialist philosophers were very big on the idea of free will.

They believed that while circumstances could limit your choices, there were always choices to be made.  Existentialists also argued that while many people make a show of loving freedom, most experience it as a dizzying burden and seek every opportunity to flee from it. To recognize the possibility of possibility, to countenance your personal accountability in every situation, to take radical responsibility for your life, is, in fact, a terrifying prospect.

Faced with this anxiety, people attempt to narrow the scope of their freedom, positing that they are bound by external circumstances to make certain choices; that in such and such a case, their hands are tied.

RUSSIA celebrated Victory Day on Thursday last, the anniversary of the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany in World War II.

REFLECTION: Previous research supports their hypothesis. People who look at life from a positive perspective have a much better shot at avoiding death from any type of cardiovascular risk than pessimistic people, according to a 2019 study. In fact, the more positive the person, the greater the protection from heart attacks, stroke and any cause of death. It’s not just your heart that’s protected by a positive outlook. Prior research has found a direct link between optimism and other positive health attributes, such as healthier diet and exercise behaviours, a stronger immune system and better lung function, among others.

TWO MEN FROM GLIN, Co. LIMERICK:

Constable James O’Brien and Eamonn Dore

The first casualty of the Easter Rising of 1916 was Dublin Metropolitan Police (DMP) Constable James O’Brien, a native of Kilfergus, Glin, Co. Limerick. Constable O’Brien was guarding the main gate of Dublin Castle. At approximately 11:45AM on Easter Monday, 24 April 1916, Sean Connolly led a group of Irish Citizen Army (ICA) to the gate and demanded entry. When O’Brien refused, Connolly shot and killed him. O’Brien, who was unarmed was aged 48 years. Ironically, Connolly was shot and killed less than an hour later on the roof of City Hall by a British sniper; becoming the first rebel to be killed in the Rising. Connolly was aged 32.

At this time, Eamonn Dore, from Main Street in Glin was a medical student at University College in Dublin. He was home in Glin for a holiday when he heard of the Rising in Dublin. He was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and the Irish Volunteers. He was a close associate of Tom Clarke and Sean MacDiarmada.  He then made his way to Dublin and the GPO. MacDiarmada ordered Dore to escort the Daly sisters, Clarke’s sisters-in-law to Kingsbridge Station. They were going to Cork and Limerick to spread the word that the Rising had begun. He escorted them safely, but saw the concentration of British soldiers in the area surrounding the GPO.

Dore came under fire, but made it safely to the GPO and reported the situation to Clarke, MacDiarmada, and James Connolly. Connolly didn’t believe Dore and went to check for himself, at which point he was wounded as a bullet shattered his ankle.

Dore had been part of an “escort” that brought James Connolly in January to meet the members of the IRB to which Connolly did not belong at that time in circumstances that are still mysterious. Dore later said Connolly came of his own accord, but other statements say otherwise. This is pure speculation on my part as to why Connolly might have distrusted Dore. Click on the link for our article on Connolly’s disappearance for more information.

https://www.facebook.com/1916risingirishcivilwar/posts/1768297986563091

As Easter week went on, Dore said of his comrades in the GPO: “They were all standing there as if nothing was wrong. The whole place was on fire, the shelling was still going on, the heat was intense. Here were these fellas waiting for further instructions.” Dore was chosen to go out in the charge led by The O’Rahilly, who hailed from Ballylongford, North Kerry; only a few miles from Glin. The O’Rahilly and several volunteers were killed in the charge. Dore and several others found shelter in a nearby yard. They remained there until the surrender. Dore was interned in Frongoch Camp in Wales.

Dore may not have been aware that Joseph Plunkett’s strategy as presented to the Germans involved the Germans occupying Limerick City and mining the river Shannon from Tarbert, Co. Kerry, (adjacent to Glin) to Foynes, Co. Limerick. Hence, Glin would have had a part to play in the initial planning of The Easter Rising.

Dore was released in January 1917. In 1918, he married Nora Daly, whom he had escorted to Kingsbridge Station. During the War of Independence, he was an IRA Intelligence Officer. After the war, he ran the Daly family bakery in Limerick City until it closed in 1959. He died in 1972. He is buried in Kilfergus cemetery in Glin, as is Constable O’ Brien.

In 2016, Dore’s daughter Mairéad was in attendance at the dedication of Centenary Bridge in Glin commemorating O’Brien and Dore; two men from Glin, Co. Limerick whose lives were affected as they found themselves on different sides of the Rising in faraway Dublin.

PEN PAL: The letters are going to some special people. The students are writing to the retired Daughters of Charity Sisters who live in Albany.

For Dalia Calandrella, a second grader at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Academy, she has a lot in common with her pen pal, Sister Mary Irene.

“She loves going to the beach and swimming and reading, and so do I,” Calandrella said.

The assistant principal of the Queens school, Sister Donna Smith, was at the nuns’ nursing home facility during the pandemic and witnessed how difficult and lonely that time was for the mostly senior sisters.

EVENT: When I am attending a public event, can the organisers take promotional photographs of me without my consent? ————————————————————

In practical terms, at large events it is advisable to have written notices in place advising attendees of the intention to take photos, the purpose of taking the photo and the intended use of the image. At smaller events it is advisable to seek the consent of those attending either in written form or by introducing a method of identifying consent from those whose photographs may be taken, for example, at a conference, green lanyards could be given to those who consent to their photo being taken during the course of the conference, and red lanyards to those who do not consent.
