OUT AND ABOUT

Athea was once again thrown into shock over the past few days when news filtered through on the passing of a young mother in her late 40s. Philomena Keily of Templeathea lost her battle with cancer leaving behind her beloved husband Anthony and son Rhys and daughters Sarah, ,Molly and Julia and her mother Peg , along with her sister Julie and brothers William and Michael, many relatives and friends who all will miss her terribly as she was a caring and generous person who would help anyone when needed. Many came to Athea Church on Sunday evening to pay their respects to her family. Again on Monday Requiem Mass was concelebrated by Fr. Willie Russell and Canon Tony Mullins with a large crowd in attendance. Philomena’s husband Anthony gave one important message to all in his talk and urged all if they weren’t feeling 100 per cent and had any doubts to please go and get checked. In his sorrow he wanted to get his important message across. Philomena was cremated following Mass. Our deepest sympathy to all her loving family. No doubt she has a seat in Heaven.

Well, on a happier note,  if anyone out there was watching the Fleadh in Mullingar on Friday night last,  there we spotted the one and only Domhnall de Barra playing his heart out on his accordion with the Liverpool Ceili Band. They were belting it out good o and everyone was enjoying it no end well done.

Starting this Wednesday night at 7.30 -8.30 in The Library there will be a Scripture Reflection for Lent with Pat Higgins and Sean O’Mochain followed by tea and a chat  .Everyone is welcome and the reflection will continue every Wednesday evening until March 27th., a nice idea for Lent.

Congrats and well done to Tarbert Comprehensive Football Team who on Saturday last travelled to Banteer to play Bantry in the Munster Schools Final. It was played on Astro Turf and to say it was exciting was putting it mildly. Tarbert won by just 1 point at the whistle and now go forward to the All Ireland semi-final against a Leinster team next Saturday in either Portlaoise or Carlow. Congrats to the Athea players on the team; Callum Buckley, Evan Curry, and James Broderick. There were badly grazed knees etc from the Astro but all agreed it was well worth the pain!!!!! We wish them well for Saturday’s semi -final and hopefully they will go all the way.

Do you need a DIGITAL DETOX. What is this you may ask . It’s been advised that we all need one. It means coming off our phones and technology for periods of time as brains have to take a DETOX we are advised. Parents are advised to set the example with no phones at dinner time and all phones including parent’s to be left on the kitchen table at bedtime. Those in the know are saying people aren’t mindful anymore and the art of conversation  is gone out the window  to say the least. Indeed food for thought .

Well the nice weather over the past few days has enabled people to give a trim to their lawns as they are growing so fast, Hopefully the nice weather will remain with us, at least it hasn’t been a snowy winter so we are lucky in that respect.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Don’t Give Up

Don’t take Anything Personally

And don’t take NO for an answer.
