HELP: Facilitator Needed. The diocese wants a Facilitator from this parish to organize a meeting so as to explore the future of this parish. The purpose of this meeting is to develop ways to respond to the challenge of the diminishing numbers of priests. Each parish is being asked to do this. The meeting is scheduled for late February and on February 7th there will be a zoom training session for all those selected to be facilitators. If you are ready to volunteer or if you suggest a person, let Fr. Brendan know so that the name is sent to the diocese who will choose the person for this role. Time is short, before January 28th.

ST BRIGID’S Day (Lá Fhéile Bríde) is celebrated on February 1st. The Bank Holiday will take place on the first Monday in February each year, except where St Brigid’s day happens to fall on a Friday, in which case that Friday February 1st will be a public holiday.

To mark St. Brigid’s Day 2024, two events are currently being planned to take place at St. Bartholomew’s Church, Athea. A workshop will be held at the Church on January 31st ( St Brigid’s Eve) at 7.30pm, where everyone is welcome to come along and make a St Brigid’s Cross. Materials will be provided, and there will be some experts at hand to guide you. Tea and Coffee will also be served. During Sunday morning Mass on February 4th a short re-enactment of the life of St Brigid will be acted out by some local children. We would like to extend a cead míle fáilte to everyone to join us for both events, to commemorate & remember this special saint.

FODDER: The National Fodder and Food Security Committee (NFFSC) is to meet this week following a request from Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue.

WRITER: Walsh, Maurice (1879–1964), author and civil servant, was born 21 April 1879 at Ballydonoghue, Listowel, Co. Kerry, third child and eldest son among four sons and six daughters of John Walsh, a farmer, and Elizabeth Walsh (née Buckley), of Tullamore, Co. Kerry.
He married (1908) Caroline Isobel Thomson Begg (1886–1941), of Dufftown, Banffshire, Scotland; they had three sons and two daughters. He died 18 February 1964, and was buried in Esker cemetery, Lucan, Co. Dublin. His papers are in the University of Limerick library.

LONDON — On May 13, 1907, Vladimir Lenin, Leon Trotsky and Joseph Stalin stood in a London church as the Fifth Congress of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party planned a revolution.
Just 10 years later, as the Bolshevik-led October Revolution of 1917 took place, a new world order was born.
For those who grew up in the subsequent Cold War in which the communist and free worlds fought for ascendancy, the attractions of socialist utopias, erected upon the corpses of many millions of ordinary people, never held any attraction. However, for a new generation that came of age as communism was being consigned to the history books, socialism has emerged as a strangely attractive proposition.

CONSUMERISM: Some aspects of rampant consumerism have resulted in startling anomalies. Worldwatch reports that worldwide annual expenditures for cosmetics total U.S. $18 billion; the estimate for annual expenditures required to eliminate hunger and malnutrition is $19 billion. Expenditures on pet food in the United States and Europe total $17 billion a year; the estimated cost of immunizing every child, providing clean drinking water for all, and achieving universal literacy is $16.3 billion.
There is, of course, no easy solution to the problem. The authors call for green taxes (to reflect the true environmental costs of a product), take-back programs that require manufacturers to recycle packaging or goods, and consumer education and awareness programs.
But first and foremost we need to reorient our way of thinking, says Gardner.
“The goal is to focus not so much on sacrifice, but on how to provide a higher quality of life using the lowest amount of raw materials,” he said. “We need to change the way we produce goods and the way we consume them.”

Ireland may be facing in to one of the coldest winters in 50 years, according to meteorologists, but the cold snap which gripped the country over the past six weeks was mild in comparison to the Great Irish Frost of 1740 that killed almost one fifth of the population.
ewhere in the range of 310,000 and 480,000 people, out of the 2.4 million population, are believed to have perished during the extreme weather conditions which swept across the country, between 1739 and 1741, according to the book “Arctic Ireland.”
The book’s author, Trinity College professor David Dickson, says the frost “remains to this day, the longest period of extreme cold in modern European history”.

CO2; In 2021, the average North American emitted 11 times more energy-related CO2 than the average African. Yet variations across income groups are even more significant. The top 1% of emitters globally each had carbon footprints of over 50 tonnes of CO2 in 2021, more than 1 000 times greater than those of the bottom 1% of emitters. Meanwhile, the global average energy-related carbon footprint is around 4.7 tonnes of CO2 per person – the equivalent of taking two round-trip flights between Singapore and New York, or of driving an average SUV for 18 months. These large contrasts reflect great differences in income and wealth, and in lifestyles and consumption patterns.

GAMBLING: During Sky’s live football coverage between noon and 5pm, I counted 64 advertisements that sought to part the consumer from their cash (I ignored plugs for Sky TV). Thirty seven of these were for consumer goods and the other 27 urged people to ‘bet now’, ‘cash out’ and, inevitably, ‘win’. So more than 42% of adverts selling me a product before the watershed were encouraging me to gamble.
The companies that paid Sky a hefty sum to run these ads – money that will no doubt contribute to the financial health of all of Mr Murdoch’s companies – were: Paddy Power, BetFair, Coral, Ladbrokes, Betway, 365, Betstars, William Hill, Sky Bet and Lotto. There was also a 10-minute interview with a footballer wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with Bet Victor, together with the inevitable in-programme logos on clothes, billboards and studio walls.
