TREES: The 100 Million Trees Project is a new national initiative developed by brothers, Richard and David Mulcahy, which aims to see the planting of 100 million native Irish trees across the island of Ireland throughout the next decade, as a community-driven initiative to reverse the immense environmental damage caused by the reduction of forests worldwide and the loss of huge areas of biodiversity. The project’s ambitious aim will be achieved through densely planting between 500 and 2,500 native Irish trees at a time across small areas of land.

BRAVE IRISH GUARDS
Private W. Cooper, 1st Batt, Blackwatch Regiment, at present in the Military Home, A. Hospital, Park Gate . Neston, Cheshire, writes as follows:—”Because they did not wish the Germans to wreak their vengeance on the house and village which had sheltered them, two Irish Guards risked their lives in the most heroic manner. One of them had carried his chum, who was slightly wounded, to a farm house, under fire, and when retreat came they got left behind. Suddenly a German patrol appeared. There were only two (one wounded) against a dozen Uhlans, but behind a barrier of furniture the two Irishmen kept the Germans at bay, wounding and killing half of them. The Germans then made off and brought a machine gun to the house, and threatened to destroy it. The two soldiers, not unmindful of the Kindness shown them by the owners of the farm, and rather than bring loss on them or the village , made a rush out, with some mad idea of taking the gun but in vain. Just over the threshold of the door they fell wounded. Now, I am glad to hear they are back in England. I have found out their names and numbers to be—2096 Private Patrick O’Regan (Rochestown, Co. Cork), 314 Private Clune, of Co. Clare.

BRAVE IRISH OFFICER. ENTIRE ABSENCE OF FEAR
Referring to the death at the front of Major Lord Desmond Fitzgerald, the ” Daily Telegraph” says.—” Lord Desmond was 27 years of age last September, and his military career, though it has been short, was “marked with conspicuous gallantry in several episodes during the present war. Twice was he wounded, and in addition to having his name mentioned in despatches he was awarded the Military Cross. His death will be deeply deplored in the Irish Guards, for he was a very capable officer, and was highly esteemed in all ranks of the regiment. ” Lord Desmond did not know what, fear was, and like all his countrymen faced the greatest dangers with a joke on his lips. ” Educated at Eton and Sandhurst, he joined the Irish Guards as a second lieutenant in 1909, got his captaincy in Oct., 1910, and was made a major last July. He had been adjutant since 1913.”

The term “greenwashing” was coined by environmentalist Jay Westerveld in 1986 in an essay criticising the irony of the “save the towel” movement in hotels at the time. He noticed the vast amount of waste he had come across throughout the rest of the hotel, where there were no visible signs of efforts being made to become more sustainable. He said that instead, the hotel was simply trying to reduce costs by not having to wash towels as much but while trying to market it as being eco-friendly.

These Brendan initiatives are spearheaded by Storied Kerry/Ciarrai Scealach, whose chairman Frank Lewis said ‘the great Kerry story is St Brendan.’ The Brendan Project needs three independent permanent pillars. The first of these is to tell Brendan’s extraordinary story to today’s world. The second is to build a Brendan archive and to further study this. And thirdly.. what is Brendan’s message for today, what is his challenge to our world.
Dick Spring gave some highlights from the great Brendan legend “ with his fellow monks Brendan visits the island of Birds (the Faroes?). A bare island starts to sink when they light a fire. An island with mountains spewing out great rocks of fire must be volcanic activity on Iceland. Floating crystal cathedrals sounds like icebergs off Greenland.’
