Athea Junior Men
Relegation Playoff V Bruff 08/10/23
Without there being the fanfare of a final, a vitally important game in the history of the club was played on Sunday in Feenagh. Faced with the possibility of relegation down from Premier Junior A to Junior A, having not won a game in the championship this year, Seamus O’Donnell’s men were face with a task. They had a job to do, and they stepped up to the mark superbly. Andrew O’Riordan got us off to a great start with a fine point. Sean Ryan and Denis Greaney followed either side of a Bruff point. TJ Hunt got his first from a free. He would end up with three points and Andrew with a goal and three. Andrew’s next two points were great scores off either foot from distance. Sean Ryan and Micheal Tierney both got scores before halftime. We lead 0-09 to 0-03 at halftime. We started the second half poorly, conceding a goal and a point immediately for the third game this
tear. Our response however, was excellent this time, not conceding again after that and racking up a score of 1-13 before then end. Shane Mulvihill, Eoin O’Shea and Jack O’Connor getting scores before Andrew’s well taken goal. We lost Dylan Griffin and Martin Chawke to injury, the former early in the second half, both had been excellent. It wasn’t a game we would have liked to be playing, but O’Donnell’s team got the job done with great style.
