DEATH of Joe (The Hammer) O’Brien of Sharwood Estate, Newcastle West, on 27th September 2023 at Milford Care Centre. Husband of the late Mary. Survived by his son Alan, daughters Amanda and Paula, sons-in-law Adrian and Neilus, grandchildren Michael, Ryan and Eoin, brothers, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, and nieces. Requiem Mass for Joe was celebrated at the Church of The Immaculate Conception, Newcastle West, on Saturday, 30th September, burial afterwards in Ardagh Cemetery. Joe went to school in Knockanure for a while and loved to visit the community centre and recall school days. He loved his football team West ham, that’s where Joe got his nickname Joe hammer.

VILLAGE Festival: John Moriarty: Grounded in Story, The opening night of the 30th Moyvane Village Festival promises to be a very special evening of stories about the great John Moriarty –A unique event-     JOHN MORIARTY GROUNDED IN STORY

John Moriarty’s roots are in Moyvane. Stories he tells about growing up here in the 1940’s are known and loved by readers the world over. This is a celebration of the land, the characters and the stories that influenced John Moriarty and shaped his worldview.

Martin Shaw is an international storyteller and author of several books. His book ‘A Hut at the Edge of the Village’ is about John Moriarty.

Martin is on a nationwide tour and is taking the time to join us for this unique event on Moriarty’s home turf on October 27th. He will be joined by Mary McGillicuddy has spoken widely on John Moriarty including at Clifden Arts Festival. She  is author of ‘John Moriarty Not the Whole Story’.

Gabriel Fitzmaurice is a well-known poet, author and story teller who knew John Moriarty well.

Amanda Carmody is John’s niece and Chairperson of the John Moriarty Institute.  There will be tea and refreshments served afterwards with time to mingle and chat.

We are delighted to host an evening of talks led by leading academics and historians, in conjunction with Architecture Kerry Festival 2023.  In addition, Kerry Writers’ Museum will host ‘Burning the Big House: The Story of the Irish Country House in Revolution 1920-1923’, an exhibition curated by Professor Terence Dooley, Head of the History Department at Maynooth and Director of the Centre for the Study of Historic Irish Houses and Estates (CSHIHE). This exhibition explores the legacy of the War of Independence and Civil War when nearly three hundred country houses were burned. Whether they were symbols of colonialism or centres of Irish culture and craftsmanship, their legacy has endured.
