HUNGER Strike, Ireland’s biggest hunger strike 1923; By October 24, the Cork Examiner estimated that almost 8,200 prisoners were refusing food. They included 3,900 in the Curragh, 1,700 in Newbridge, 711 in Gormanston, 350 in Kilkenny, 263 on the prison ship ‘Argenta’ in Belfast Lough, 200 in Dundalk, 100 in Hare Park, and 70 in Cork City Gaol. Soon to join them were 51 of the 86 women prisoners in North Dublin Union barracks. Earlier hunger strikes in Ireland had been on a significantly smaller scale: 143 men and 2 women in 1918, and 78 prisoners in Cork County Gaol in 1920. Those refusing to eat in 1923 complained of being beaten and having hoses turned on them.

By Esme Stallard & Justin Rowlatt- BBC News Climate and Science
Billions of pounds’ worth of green energy projects are on hold because they cannot plug into the UK’s electricity system, BBC research shows.
Some new solar and wind sites are waiting up to 10 to 15 years to be connected because of a lack of capacity in the system – known as the “grid”.
Renewable energy companies worry it could threaten UK climate targets.
National Grid, which manages the system, acknowledges the problem but says fundamental reform is needed.
The UK currently has a 2035 target for 100% of its electricity to be produced without carbon emissions.

Saint John XXIII’s Story. Saint of Day Oct 11th.

FITZMAURICE: This is the sixth webinar in the series, in the lecture Kay Caball explores in wonderful detail many facets of the dramatic lives of the Fitzmaurice dynasty of North Kerry. Kay has recently published a book of the same name entitled ‘The Fall of the Fitzmaurices’.
Both the webinar and the book recall in vivid detail the story of the demise of the Fitzmaurice family, who had been powerful Lords of Kerry since the year 1235. However, by 1818, after over five hundred years as Kerry’s premier family, their titles and estates were no more. Overall, this is an engaging, informative and fascinating webinar.
