OUT AND ABOUT

Firstly we must congratulate all those who received their Junior Cert results this past week. This being their first big exam I’m sure they were all super excited with their results. Well done to them all as they move on another step forward in their lives.

Well Storm Babet surely did reek havoc on many places over the past week with Middleton in Cork being so badly affected with floods ruining homes and business premises alike. Hopefully there won’t be too many storms and floods this Winter , we live in pope, and hopefully residents and shop owners will be compensated in full sooner rather than later so they can get on with their lives.

Well Athea was thrown into shock again this week with the passing of yet another 2 young women in our parish along with Angela Cafferkey  last week which made 3 in total. Mary Wallace of Coole West went to her Eternal Reward  with a huge crowd paying their last respects at Harnett’s Funeral Parlour in Abbeyfeale on Sunday Evening last. Mary taught at the boys N.S  in Rathkeale  for many years where she was much loved by pupils and staff alike. Burial took place in Holy Cross Cemetry on Monday  following Requiem Mass in Abbeyfeale. Sincere sympathy is extended to her husband John, her sons Alan and Evan,  her parents Betty and Jack, brother David and many good friends and relatives. May the light of Heaven be hers.

Loretta Barrett’s untimely passing was again another great shock to the Athea Community, Loretta lived in Co Kildare ,and was a constant visitor home to Athea .She was much loved by her work colleagues and was part of a big family in Lower Athea and was predeceased by her parents Kitty and John -Joe. Many paid their final respects at Finucane’s funeral home at Gale Bridge on Sunday evening last. Requiem Mass on Monday was followed by burial in Holy Cross Cemetery. Sincere sympathy to her sisters, brothers,  many relatives and friends. May she rest in peace.

Sincere congratulations go to Mary T Mulvihill, our recently retired undertaker, who celebrates her very special 70th birthday this week. No doubt celebrations to follow later.!!!!

The very best of luck to the Athea Tidy Towns group who are Going For Gold on this Wednesday night in Limerick. They deserve to do well and, as I’ve said before, its the whole parishes responsibility to help keep ones own little patch and roads clean and tidy thereby giving a helping hand to the Tidy Towns.

The AGM of our Hall is coming up shortly and in 2024 can you believe it will be open 50 years. It was President Erskine Childers who did the honours those many years ago. Its such a great asset to our community for parties, meetings and so many sports keeping kids and adults fit and healthy.

Lots of improvements have been made over the years and no doubt will continue along with ongoing maintenance which is imperative

 THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
