PADRE Pio Devotions will return to the Church of Saints Stephen and John in Castleisland on Tuesday, September 19th at 7.30pm. The devotions will then continue to be held on the third Tuesday of each month until the summer break. Padre Pio’s Feast Day: Saturday 23 September 2023.
THANKS: The parents association of Scoil Chorp Chriost we would like to thank Knockanure GAA for the use of their field for our family fun day on Sunday last 10th of September. We also like to thank all the sponsors, volunteers and our four local stars who took part on our day and made our fun day possible. We like to thank everyone that supported us on the day from within and the surrounding parish. We hope everyone had a great day. Hope to see all again in 2024 at Knockanure family fun day.
PARISH: Eucharistic Adoration: every Tues. after 10.00am Mass to 11.30am. Baptisms: Saturday afternoons only from 12 noon to 4pm. From the Parish Pastoral Council meeting of Sept. 5th, the following items emerged: On the departure of Grace Leahy, as Sacristan, from Knockanure, a temporary arrangement has been agreed and will be subject to on-going review. We are grateful for Grace’s services over the years and wish her every blessing. Currently, new members of the Parish Pastoral Council are being selected: if you have anybody in mind (not yourself) who you think might be right, please let Fr. Brendan know. On instruction from the diocese, after inquiry, church buildings should be used for religious services and for specifically religious events only. Anything else needs diocesan approval. Confirmation this year should, it was agreed, include celebration of the Eucharist. Taking a pledge will be a separate issue. The Knockanure Pathway Committee plans to develop a walkway from the village to the GAA grounds. As it will pass through the church parking lot, its feasibility is a matter for the diocese.

O CONNOR Family: We can trace our O’Connor family back to two brothers (although it is a possibility they were first cousins rather than brothers), one of whom had at least one son, Patrick (my great-great-grandfather) and possibly another son named Jeremiah. The other brother had at least one son, Maurice. My ancestor Patrick (born around 1800) farmed in Dirreen, Athea, Co. Limerick, and his probable brother Jeremiah (born around 1793) in Seconglass, Mountcollins, Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick. Their probable cousin Maurice (born around 1825) lived in Caherlevoy, Mountcollins, Co. Limerick.

FARMING: Independent TD, Deputy Mattie McGrath has accused Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue of “undermining farmers’ progress”.
Over the past decade, the deputy said, farmers were “actively encouraged” by successive Irish governments to boost dairy production, with quotas eliminated as a green light.
However, he said that the minister is now “undermining their progress by failing to secure approval” from the European Commission to keep the limit of the current nitrates derogation.

QUEEN: Anatomy of a British Queen: Scotland, the Netherlands, and beyond
September 2023 marks the one-year anniversary of the reign of Charles III in the United Kingdom, and in the list of British queen consorts, adds the name of Camilla Shand. In the history of royal consorts, in Britain or elsewhere in Europe, or indeed at the top of the European aristocracy—the dukes and princes—a family name like Shand would not normally have appeared, or would have been seen as a mésalliance, and in many cases would have cost a prince and his heirs their position in the succession. These strict house rules that regulated succession have never been as forceful in Britain as they were in most continental royal and princely houses—otherwise Henry VIII could have never married who he did!

ROME: (JTA) – Newly uncovered documentation appears to confirm that Catholic convents and monasteries sheltered more than 3,000 Jews from the Holocaust following the Nazi takeover of Rome in 1943.
The papers, which have yet to be made public, were discovered at Vatican City’s Pontifical Biblical Institute and announced on Thursday. They contain the names of 3,200 people who have been verified to be Jews by the organizing body of Rome’s Jewish community.
The research was a joint project of the institute, Rome’s Jewish community and Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust museum, in addition to two Catholic-affiliated universities. It was coordinated by Dominik Markl, a scholar at the institute.

Found Martin Sheridan and Jack Kennelly, Kerry’s famous forward, in earnest conversation on Sunday last at Celtic Park. Kennelly was the “home-run Baker” of the day, for the dashing footballer played a sensational game, being accountable for the majority of scores made by the kingdom team. ‘Twas some fun listening to the world-famed Martin and the star footballer exchange opinions on
Gaelic football, for Sheridan is well posted on Gaelic games. In the meantime some of Matt Brassill’s special eats hove in sight, but two waiters were kept busy while Sheridan had his seven-course dinner. Kennelly kept his lamps on “Martin,” as the famous discus thrower cleaned up, but he refused to comment On the spread which soon vanished. Kennelly and Sheridan are warm friends.

Big Pat Casey and Jack Kennelly played a wonderful game at Celtic Park on Sunday last. Casey is a great footballer, probably the greatest In our midst, for In Sunday’s game he showed up In his old-time form. The Casey boys were the backbone of the great Kerry combination, but since Tim’s departure to Omaha the fearless “Paddy” has proudly maintained the family reputation.

The Kerry football team are to have a big time at Donovan’s Fifty-ninth street halls this Saturday night, where they intend celebrating their recent victory. Heat, Lights and Appliances
In the average American home, 25 percent of energy is used to heat spaces, 13 percent is used to heat water, 11 percent is used for cooling and the remainder is spent on appliances, according to estimates from the Natural Resources Defense Council. Making even small changes to these can make a big difference, said Noah Horowitz, a senior scientist and director of the N.R.D.C.’s Center for Energy Efficiency. “There’s a lot you can do without having to pick up a hammer or write a check,” he said. (This calculator can help you work out your energy usage before and after you make these changes.)

Michael Hartnett 1941-1999
Michael Hartnett was, and continues to be, one of Ireland’s most loved poets. He always made the point that he was born in Croom, home of the Maigue poets, but Newcastle West was his homeplace. He began writing poetry as a young teenager and his first collection, Anatomy of a Cliché was published in 1968. A sometimes controversial writer, he wrote in both English and Irish and also translated the work of a number of medieval Irish poets. He was the recipient of a number of awards including the Irish Poetry Prize, a Poetry Ireland Choice award and the American Ireland Fund Award. He was a member of Aosdána. Michael died in Dublin in 1999.

LNG Shannon: €650m gas facility refusal.
Environment Minister Eamon Ryan has rejected claims that An Bord Pleanála’s refusal today of permission for the Shannon Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project will cost jobs in the West and jeopardise national energy security.
Mr Ryan said energy security would come from deploying greater renewables and with greater efficiency in energy use, arguing it was over-dependency on gas had caused the spike in prices and concerns over supply.
He also said Kerry, Clare and Limerick would receive a huge jobs boost from focusing on offshore wind. —————————–
The head of policy at environmental organisation Friends of the Earth said this planning refusal is “welcome and hard-fought”.
Irish Academy of Engineering Energy & Climate Action Committee Chair Don Moore said he believes Ireland is adopting high-risk strategy.

The bus trip was enjoyable and relaxing with the good road from Adare. Next year’s date is likely to be August 24th.
Lourdes – 150 travelled to Lourdes. Next year we hope to once more bring ‘assisted pilgrims’ (40 to 50 usually). This will require re-assembling the team to assist them (a doctor, nurses, other support staff, youth from secondary schools). New team members will be welcome, and also parishes can help identify those who would benefit from travelling as ‘assisted pilgrims.
Ballyheigue – Finally, in wonderful sunshine the annual Mass at ‘Our Lady’s Well’ Ballyheigue was a joyful spiritual occasion. Amazing to see as many as 2,000 reverently participate in the Mass. Many other parishes have strong traditions of Holy Wells. It is good to promote prayer.
at these Holy Wells – especially where there is a tradition of people visiting the wells regularly and also on a set popular annual Pattern Day.
