FESTIVAL Interceltique de Lorient Lorient: 4th to 13th August 2023.
Every year it’s the same song and dance! Since 1971, this festival has really got it in the bag-ad, for every year it’s bombard-ed with over 700,000 visitors coming to listen to the Celtic sounds of the bombards and the bagad. Just like the Pied Piper, this inter-Celtic parade mesmerises the crowd, assembled here to celebrate an inter-Celtic night at the Moustoir stadium or in the fishing port, to the sound of the Scottish and Spanish bagpipes that fill the air.
Each summer, around 700,000 people from all over the world invade the Celtic land of Lorient for the Festival Interceltique. From Galicia to Scotland, the cream of Celtic music can be found here, to be enjoyed in a really convivial atmosphere.
VENTILATION systems will become more important in the continuing drive towards more energy efficient homes, as this will only see properties becoming even more airtight via increased insulation and double glazed windows. Without ventilation, the occupants of these airtight buildings really will be at risk from the health problems associated with poor indoor air quality.

Microplastic pollution through washing and wearing
Microplastics washed off from synthetic clothes contribute up to 35% of the plastic particles polluting our oceans. Every time we do our laundry, an average of 9 million microfibers end up in the wastewater treatment plants that cannot filter them, and because of that, these fibers end up in the ocean. Also, just by wearing synthetic clothes, plastic fibers are constantly being released in the air.
Up until now, all research was focused on microfiber pollution through laundry washing. However, a recent study shows how wearing polyester clothes pollutes the environment to a similar extent—wearing polyester clothes releases as many microplastic fibers in the air as through washing.

The Churches
The lands around Listowel were owned by Lord Landsdowne, a member of the Fitzmaurice family. A wealthy Englishman named Hare bought the lands from him in the year 1795. Later Hare was made Earl of Listowel. He visited Listowel in the year 1814 and gave sites for two churches. The protestant church was probably built the same year but the Catholic church was not built until the year 1829. The old Catholic church is said to have been situates at the back of the market. The spire of the Catholic church was not built until the year 1866. Gerald Griffin refers to the church in his book “The Collegians” Hardress Cregan and his mother were staying at Collopy’s hotel and they saw the people going to mass. This hotel is the house now known as Behan’s and the lady of the house is a descendant of
the Collopy’s.
At first there were no seats in the body of the church but there were three galleries. In the year 1907 considerable changes were made. Two aisles were added And the church was extended to the back. At the same time the wall at the back of the high altar was covered with mosaic. The parish priest at that time was Canon Davis and he is buried in front of the high altar. Another priest named Father O’Mahony was buried in the yard but his grave is now included in one of the aisles.

Old Schools
There were three hedge school masters in the district. Their names were Michael Lane, Pat Mulvihill and John Baxter. One school was in Mr Mulvihill’s place in the townland of Leitrim and the other was in Mr Baxter’s place in the townland of Ahalanaha. In the winter they used be indoors and they taught them in the summer near the hedge. The school used be carried on in the farmers’ houses. They used be paid three shillings a quarter. The teachers taught the pupils Irish, English, Latin, Arithmetic and Algebra. Irish was spoken by masters and pupils in some subjects. The name of the book they used was the Primer. They used write with pen and pencil and slate and with a quill. They used be sitting half the day and they used be standing the rest of the day. They used a big slate as a blackboard.

Since the Green Revolution, an emphasis on cropland productivity has overtaken time-proven traditional practices that actually played an important role in the sustainability of farming. It has also shifted the landscape toward heavy monoculture instead of a healthy mix of wild crops, threatening food security by its “all eggs in one basket” nature.
Earth.Org takes a closer look.
